OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

what can sailors take on deployed ship
Is there a list or is there an experienced mom who knows what they are allowed to take on a deployed ship? Especially would like to know what devices, such as cell phones, computers, kindles etc. and can it be 3G? Thanks for your help.

Wouldnt recommend cell phone unless you have a calling card for it the roaming charge is enormous. laptop computers are ok kindles would be fine. He will get thoroughly briefed before he ships out. He will be required to make out a will and issue a poa these are standard on deployments.

There is one list because different ships can have different rules. They can take personal electronics with them (NOT desktop computers or TVs), some can even have game consoles if they have a place to keep them such as an electronics shop.
However, cellphones won't work at sea, even 3G. The coverage just doesn't exist at sea. They can use the phones in port, and must be very careful about roaming international charges. They can have tablets or laptops, but there is no wifi at sea, and while the ship has limited internet access, they must use the shared ship's computers. Again, they can use their devices in port. Having a device like a tablet or kindle preloaded with content is a very good idea. They won't be able to upload or stream, so if the device can access an external drive, that's a good way to haul around a library of books, music and movies.
Be aware there is very limited space, and a lot of theft.

I wouldn't worry so much about the electronics think about the care boxes you will send him homemade cookies, favorite snacks, mags that he likes and can share above all put in extra so he can share with his buddies on board. Paperback books when done he can add to ships library for others to read. Sound crazy but soft toilet tissue is always nice too.
set up his first deployment book and when he takes pics oh does he have a little sure shot you can add them to it and follow where he went. maybe even pick up a wall map mount it on heavy cardboard and use color head pins to mark is visits. It's fun for you and helps you follow along
