My son has only been in boot camp for 3 days now.  He wears a retainer, and his orthodontist said he should really be wearing it every night since his wisdom teeth are coming in and could make his teeth crooked again.  However, his recruiter didn't know if he could have it, and besides he forgot to take it.  Will I be able to send it to him?  Also, will I be able to send him a prepaid phone card?  I wish I would have read through this web site before my son left, because there is so much good info on here.

Thank you.

The retainer I don't know about but you do need to send him an activated prepaid phone card...he'll need it for the few phone calls home he gets. You should be able to get his temporary address from his recruiter.

If I were you I'd go to the RTC Public Affairs profile (yes they have one...cool huh?) and ask them about the retainer. Just go to members and put RTC in the search box.

Do you have any other questions?
I left you a greeting message on your profile page with a boot camp moms group link to join...join it and also join the group http://www.navyformoms.com/group/leavinforbootcampinaugust here you'll connect with other N4M's whose rcts left when yours did.

It looks like his PIR (Pass In Review=graduation) date will be 10/1 but you won't know for sure till you get the form letter

You may want to go to YouTube and search navy boot camp, graduation and Battlestations 21 (CNN does it) to give you an idea of what he is going through (or will be going through)

The videos and forums tabs here are also full of info
Thank you very much for all of your info. I joined the August bootcamp link. I will be sure and check out the YouTube navy boot camp. Thanks also for all of the retainer info. Will they send me something telling me what I can and cannot send?

Thanks.
If his wisdom teeth are coming in, they may remove them and solve the problem. Usually recruits get their wisdom teeth removed anyway. They don't want any impacted wisdom teeth giving any problems when they're out ot sea with no oral surgeon available. Yes, you should send him an activated phone card. He'll be glad of it when he's allowed to make a call home.
My sailor son wasn't allowed to have a retainer at BC, he also had just had his braces removed. Three and half years later his teeth look great so try not to worry. I hope your son makes the most out of the Navy and has a great career, so far it's been great for my boy.
No I don't think there is a list of what not to send per se BUT don't send care pkgs, food of any kind, musical cards, no stickers on envelopes. Try not ot stuff the envelopes...if you do they may have to open it in front of the RDC..no big deal but embarrassing.

You can send jokes, cards, photos (most scan them onto regular paper), WRITE everyday, I typed my letters (easier for them to read..most read in bed and at night there is a softly glowing red light so no red ink and use a larger font) and printed jokes from http://www.jokesgallery.com on the back.. My son shared them with his division and they loved them.

Send calling cards (activated if not activated in store), Just send lots of love and support. On your PIR group when you join it there should be some questionaires in the discussion forum for you to send....makes it easier for them to let you know what you want to know..yes/no fill in the blanks kind of thing.
