My sailor will be direct support based in Hawaii. He is getting an iphone 4s for Christmas. Should we add the global plan for when he is on various ships in the Pacific? or keep our regular national plan and let him use a calling card to make calls? I know this has been covered a bunch of times but I can't seem to find it anywhere.Help!
Hawaii, being the US, has calling plans which are affordable. While at sea, they cannot use their personal phones, they must use the ship's satellite phones. He can use a calling card while in ports overseas as the global calling plans will slay him with roaming charges, running into the thousand dollar range a month, especially for data.
Thank-you! I feel like I did when he left for bootcamp last year. So much new information to learn. Last December we were preparing for bc, this December to Hawaii. We are just really happy that he is going to be home for Christmas.
Make sure he knows that even using his phone for music while at sea could incur roaming charges; we see this all the time on Japan moms. He must talk to his provider, and check his bills carefully. Best to keep the phone off when not in his home area. That global thing is expensive and has a lot of exceptions which will bite a user in the bum. When he gets to Hawaii, he should talk to the other sailors about what they use. Firsthand knowledge is always best.
That phone is next to useless in Japan!
