My boyfriend of 6 years is graduating boot camp January 24, 2014. He put me, his mom, his dad and his sister on the list to attend his PIR. I have NO idea what to even expect or how to even go about going. I am completely ecstatic to go and see him, i miss him like crazy after just a few days. His parents and sister don't go out much or travel much due to financial issues so they are pretty much relying on me to know what to do. I'm still in college and haven't traveled much myself without my own family. Please help!! Where is the best place to stay? What should I plan to do the morning/day of graduation? What do I bring for him? (flowers, balloons, etc???) Any other helpful tips are more than appreciated!!

there are tons of hotels in the area! just be sure you read reviews, some of the hotels around military bases can get pretty run down.  Also, check the Navy Lodge Great Lakes. Navy Lodges are usually pretty nice and obviously close to the base.  All the info you need for the morning of graduation should be in the "form letter" that was probably sent to his parents. Challenge coins make good gifts for graduation; if you just google US Navy challenge coins you can order them from lots of different websites. I don't know where you're from but dress warm because it's bitter cold there in the winter!  I know, I lived there for one winter when my husband was in A school.

Hi there I am new to this site my daughter is also graduating on January 24th. We are on a budget as well and originally were going to stay at the Navy Gateway on base, but after speaking with Sarge I checked into the facilities and the breakfast and found there was not much to them. Because we are not military we cannot use anything on the base unless she is with us. The rate is 62 a night with no tax but the breakfast is not much and I have 2 boys so I would have to go somewhere to feed them a good breakfast. I am going to stay at the Sprinhill Marriot Residence Inn and the military rate is $99 per night plus tax with a full hot breakfast complimentary each morning. It is only a few miles away from the base and a shuttle service is available at the cost of $3.00 each way. This hotel is not on the pamphlet that you get but Sarge told me about it and the staff has been very helpful. The number there is 847-688-9800 and Kevin in sales can help you. This is a Marriot hotel. I called and checked on a lot of them but this one seemed to be the best for us and our needs. Hopes this helps you and maybe we will be able to meet up there!!
Sounds like you have received some good advice. The sites lemonelephant directed you to are very helpful, good luck. There are several people staying at the Navy Lodge, said it around $ 66 a night. My husband travels a lot and has reserved the Hampton inn for us. I wanted the Navy Lodge because it is so close.

Please come back after PIR and let us others know how things go and where to go during the PIR. My son PIR is the next weekend.

My boyfriend is graduating on the 3rd, so I'm finally finalizing everything. 1. if you book hotel AND flight together on expedia or travelocity, etc, it is MUCH cheaper. 2. book a few weeks ahead of time-it gets more expensive the later you wait. I waited ONE day and I had to change my flight coming home from that of what his parents will be on because it went up $50! Just make sure the airline you book with will at least allow you to change flight dates within their airline by applying credit towards another flight, just in case something happens. 3. pack things he likes to wear, they can wear civilian's clothing in private (hotel) so it might be nice for him to get out of uniform. 4. if he is staying in GL for A School, he will have all weekend for liberty, so book for all weekend, but if he is going somewhere else, chances are is he will be leaving sometime Saturday, although it is cheaper for flights for you on Sunday. I'm leaving Thursday and coming home Sunday and the whole weekend flight and hotel fair is $365. 4. if you want, you can message me on here and we can keep in contact, because it's definitely not the same being a girlfriend missing her boyfriend in a crowd of moms missing their sons, and I can tell you what PIR was like and what to expect!

Thank you so much, i will try to remember to do that. You're right it is not the same. It's hard for me to try to talk to his mom about missing him because its so different! Thanks so much!

Thank you, you too! And will do, hope you have a safe trip up here! :)
