All throughout my childhood and my early teens I've thought about joining the military; I wasn't sure which branch, and I always said to myself, "you won't make it because you aren't physically fit." Well, here I am, almost 21 years old and considering on joining the Navy. I am definitely out of shape and not even sure if I am eligible to join because of my medical history (childhood cancer; had Hodgkin's Disease about 14 years ago - have been in remission since). I am going to talk to a recruiter today (hopefully) and ask him/her some questions about the Navy and if there is a waiver for my past condition if I would need one at all.

My big concern is leaving my husband and son for boot camp (if I am eligible to join, that is). My husband was a former US Marine and has been very supportive of my wanting to join the Navy. My father is retired Navy (20 years and some odd months/days) and always would ask "have you figured out what you want to do as a career? why not join the military?"

I guess what I am trying to get at are the typical questions:

1. How hard is boot camp? (I've talked to a couple people and they told me, "it's only as hard as you make it."

2. How long is boot camp? (I was told it is 9 weeks but I've also been hearing that it's 8 weeks.)

3. I was told that you aren't allowed/supposed to access your money while in boot camp but is it possible to have my pay sent to my husband and son while I am in boot?

Any other information about the Navy, boot camp, or exercise routines (I am very bad at running) or dieting information would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

1) yes bootcamp is as hard as you make it (that really is the correct answer)

2) yes bootcamp is between 8-9 weeks.  It depends how long you have to wait until you get in a division.

3) you can have your pay deposited where ever you want, you just take a voided check or deposit slip.

You have to run while in the USN

I talked to a recruiter today; he said I could try biking and ease myself into running that maybe riding a bike would help. Yeah, I know you have to run in the USN. I want to get somewhat fit, and I am working on a healthy diet at the moment. Hopefully I can make my goal!
