Most ATO are assigned to a squadron... they troubleshoot and if they can't quickly fix they just replace the part on the plane... then send it to the ATI who is assigned to the ship and works inside the ship fixing the parts...  they can both fix things but one is the quick look fix or replace to get the plane in the air and the other is take the time to really fix the part...

I always teased my son that I remembered the difference by inside and outside... not really what the I and O stand for but it works for me!!

sailormom my son is an ATO and assigened to a squadron but because of the plane he is assigned to he will not serve on an aircraft carrier.  When deployed he will be on land.  Went all the way through C school for ATI then the need was for ATO so he was changed over.

connie/Memphis Belle - Thank you. That was a very good explanation. My son just made it to Pensacola a couple weeks ago. He was told he was AT, then told to sign a paper that says ATO. He asked what it was and was told he needed to ask his instructor tomorrow, but needed to sign the paper. I will let him know.

hey Sailormom and welcome to our little group here!!!  ATO huh? ok here it is in a nutshell....ATO (AT-Organizational level) technicians troubleshoot various discrepancies with the use of multimeters and avionics test equipment to locate faults within the aircraft. O-level AT's are assigned to squadrons and perform most of their work on the flight deck of carriers and in the aircraft hangars on land.

simplified... ATI-inside ATO-outside.

my son is an ATI and the ATO moms will probably have more information for you.
