I think the guidelines for PIR weekend is - they can be up to 50 miles away from the base. So if you live close to GL - perhaps your son can come home but you won't know until after PIR if he has to report back each night or not.

A school does not start immediately. Your son will go thru indoc that lasts about a week and then into SCC (basic seamanship classes) that last a couple of weeks. Our son was on hold between these two classes and they give them jobs to do everyday. Landscaping, painting, cleaning, etc.

Our son had to report from PIR on Sunday evening and Monday am he went right into Indoc. They also have duty every 4th day while in GL for school.

Wendy, there do not need laptops for school. Most of the sailors that have them at the school are using them for their own personal communications or pleasure use. There are some wi-fi areas on that side of the base and often some of the sailors are using cable service in their rooms and sharing the costs with their roommates. We did not have to mail either his cell phone or laptop. When he returned to base on Sunday after his PIR liberty, he asked if he could have these items and they said he could bring them in at that time. So we saved on the shipping and more importantly worrying about - did he receive them.

Melanie.... from what I understand from my son they are required to keep them in their lockers/ Closets and are required to have a lock on all their lockers/Closets.

Bobbi, is your son at Meridian or Gulfport? My nephew just graduated from Gulfport three weeks ago and love it.

Does anyone have a sailor in San Diego at Point Loma doing Sonar???? My son starts classes on 5/5, he's been there a week doing indoc. Says he just loves sit. He's already been out for a steak dinner and shopping at Target. Was told to buy some civies, they don't want them off base in their uniforms, for safety reasons. He's in school for STG (surface, not sub).

Hello everyone, My son is in A school at Corry Station Pensacola and should graduate the end of August. That will make it 8 months since I've seen him. I don't really count the couple of hours at the airport after PIR. Darn Grad N Go. His comment to me when he gets to come home was "I can't wait to walk through the airport in my uniform" I am so so proud of him for what he's doing.

Hi. Patrick graduated 4/18 also and goes to A and C school "across the street as he puts it", but its really not directly across the street as I understand. He says he will be in Great Lakes for at least another 6 months. We/he doesn't seem to know any details about when, what, how, or where, but I'm sure he'll write or call us soon to let us know his new address.
