Thought it might be nice for everybody to say where they are staying for PIR as a means of knowing who will be in the same place, taking the shuttles, carpooling, etc. and maybe even getting together…Continue

This is the final test for the recruits before they become sailors.  It is an overnight drill held on a ship replica made by Disney, so it is very realistic....the recruits face every challenge that…Continue

I'm picturing my son writing me a sweet letter today which I will receive sometime this week :)  (Is this wishful thinking or is there some basis is reality?!)

Thanks Lynne...just looking for a reason to be optomistic today!

lojogo...I just sent you an invite to the Ship 11 Div 057 group...there are only a couple of us so far.  Kathy...why haven't you joined this group yet...lol...can't believe I beat you to the punch on something here!

Lynne, I have been on this site with this name for almost nine months and no one has ever said it was bad to show his first name.  I read the rules and it said not to use our last name.  I hate change it after all the time, but if it will affect my Sailor then I will. Thanks!

Comment by Lynne on December 12, 2010 at 10:02am

Denise...they don't go in division order for phone calls...except sometimes in battle stations...I'm sorry..there is no rhyme nor reason to phone calls except when they first get there and typically after battlestations.  Then they don't really even go in order, but at least we know what divisions are calling that day.  When the recruits get to the point where they are writing 3 times a week then they can sometimes give you warning of an impending call...I don't want to be the party pooper...I just don't want you to get your hopes up.

Logansmama...go to the groups tab and put ship11div57 in the search box...that will tell you if there is a group.  I hate to beat a dead horse but please consider changing your name to one other than your recruits first name to protect his confidentiality from the RDCs...lol...thanks!!

Good Morning!  Does anyone know if there is a group started for Ship 11 Div 057?  Just wondering.

Comment by Denise on December 12, 2010 at 9:07am

I heard from a South Carolina Mom who's SR left same day as mine, but is in Div 056 that she got a call from him yesterday.  So, maybe, if they are going in Div order, I'm hoping 057 could be calling today!

Hey all...wanted to give you something to look forward to since I know you are struggling.  My sailor is coming home the 18th....well really the 19th because he feels the need to go to a UK game before he comes home...priorities you know...lol.  Well I asked him this morning if he would be willing to sit down with me next week and answer some questions you all might have about what is going on at boot camp.  It hasn't been that long since he was there and it is pretty fresh in his mind.  So get your questions ready.

Comment by Lynne on December 12, 2010 at 3:31am

BLS and all who are struggling...you are right where you are supposed to be...and it is pretty darn normal and not only that...I bet your recruits feel very similar...you are trudging up that mountain...you can see the peak...the air gets a little thinner and the hand holds a little tougher, the rocks a little looser and you surely wonder if you are going to fall...but you aren't...you are almost there...you are about to turn the corner...and when you do...it will be all down hill...those letters will start showing up weekly, a phone call or two will lift your spriits and the midway count will begin...copy my post...and read it again in 12 days...and tell me how you feel then...you can do it ...you can make it this last leg up the mountain...I know you can!!

Now about weekend liberty and grad and go.  Let's tackle grad and go first.  There are two types of grad and go to my knowledge.  Jessica will correct me if I am wrong.  The first is the grad and go to Great Lakes.  These sailors typcially move the same day as PIR.  After PIR they move directly to A-school and it takes 3 to 5 hours then they call their families and usually have a few hours to spend with them.  In some cases they actually have been able to have entire weekends with their families, nights and all.  This was not the case during our PIR weekend but I understand it has occurred. If they do have to report back they are told the time to report back...this is not the time to be back on the base but rather when they have to be on their ship or barracks.   We will talk more about this as you get closer to PIR.  You then will be given a time to pick them up on Sat and Sun...unless they have watch or something.  Usually liberty is from 8 to 7 or so each day.

Grad and go to another base is very different.  These sailors often only have liberty for a short time on Friday and may be scheduled to leave out of the RTC early morning Saturday.  Now, it is not all bad because you can go to the airport and wait with them until their flights and sometimes these flights are not until the middle of the day so you end of having quite a bit of time with them AND you get to meet a lot of their buddies which is fun.

The third group of sailors are those who have liberty for the weekend and report to A-school the following week or so.  This group is the one my son was in.  We had him from Noon on Friday until 7, 8AM Saturday until 7PM, and again Sunday 8AM until 7 PM.  He then flew out to Pensacola on Tuesday.  If you find out your recruit is not grad and go...it is absolutely worth it to stay until Monday to have that time with them.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions about liberty weekend.  One final note....be sure you have your recruit back early for mustering in...if they are only a few seconds late they could lose their liberty priveleges the next day and delay the liberty priveleges of the entire group...not good.  It is about a 30 minute walk from the gates to their ship...so they need to prepare accordingly.  They will be well versed in this and be somewhat on edge about getting back on time so please respect this.
