2timenavymom- I have a daughter that has been in the Navy for 3 years as well and my son graduated boot camp September 6th of 2013. My daughter is a GM and my son is a BM. Isn't great to have 2 sailors? I am so proud and I'm you are as well.
Hello All and Happy New Year...I find myself here on N4M again because my sone was sworn in yesterday...I am on this page because my Sailor girl has been in the Navy for 3 years now...she is an IS
jkcmom- she took her ASVAB on December 4th and the DLAB on the 5th in STL. She originally intended to swear in for CTI (which she did) but when she made a 99 on the ASVAB (and a 252 on the combined scores) her recruiters started nudging her toward NUKE. They rushed and got her clearances before she got home. There was a position that showed up on the computer, then went away, then showed up again. The recruiters made a call to veryify it and somehow the position was held until she got back to Rolla and they could change her to NUKE. While all this was in flux, they told her if she didn't get this position she could wait and see if someone dropped out. They also said she might take till August to ship. But a week after she signed for NUKE, they gave her February 5th as a ship date!! Seems like this all happened so fast. I am a little scared. She is not a math person at all, and made B- average in college (anthro science) degree. I thought she should go CTI but she wanted to try NUKE. After reading the comments about the very high dropout for women I am even more worried. However, she was an NCAA Division 1 fencer and understands hard physical training. She just lacks study stills and I am not sure she can handle the pace of the NUKE program. I guess we'll see. Her recruiters also told her they get credit for 3 recruits on a NUKE placement (then they had the cheek to insist on a referral!!). Can you share similar info on your daughter's experience?
caolila - just curious, when is your daughter's ship date?
caolila - my daughter went to KC MEPS on December 9th. But at that time she wasn't sure about Nuke. Congrats on your daughter getting a Nuke spot! This has been a very interesting process and I've learned a lot.
jkcmom - what day did your daughter go to MEPS? Mine swore in at STL MEPS on December 5th. She got a NUKE spot, but maybe that was the last one. They also had warned her that she might have to wait for someone to drop, but then she got a spot. They never told her how likely it was for someone to drop. But today I was reading on a site that there is almost a 60% washout rate, but I assume that means after BC.
My daughter went to MEPS in December and signed as a Sonar Tech but has now been approved into the Nuke program. The recruiter's office says they only allow 19 women into the program each year and those spots have already been taken so she can either go in if someone drops out or wait until the fiscal year starts in October and be one of the first then. They said they can't give a ship date that's into the next fiscal year. Does anyone have any more insight into this? How likely is it that someone will drop out of their slot?
My daughter is another one who is shy, quiet, studious. She has always been the responsible one, following the rules, keeping her stuff organized. Her senior year, we set her down and laid out options: 4 yr college, 2 yr college, work, military, religious order and she chose military. The one thing I said she could NOT do was stay at home and be a bum! Overall, think it is best decision for her. She did prepare during her 6 month DEP and has done well in her PFA's so far. Her recruiters here were really good and I don't believe they are alla s dedicated, or so I hear. They had PT nights and study sessions, even a family potluck one evening. She knew her sailor creed and 11 general orders before she even left here. She had almost the entire DEP program study guide book down pat. I had told her as much as she could prepare ahead of time would ease the transition because there is going to be plenty more there to learn. Anyone who has a future sailor in DEP now should be working to have themselves in prime condition. The recruiters here are pretty fantastic. They had the highest female recruit count in the nation and is an all female recruiting station. They even had their picture taken for some future advertising promotion for women in the military. I haven't heard when that will come out, but I did get my 5x7 photo from it already. No letters since 12/22 and no phone calls. However, she had last told me they would not be calling again, until the end, so we are not really expecting a call, but we answer the phoen pretty quickly whenever it does ring.....just in case!
NHJ'sMom- I was very nervous for my daughter as well. She is also shy and quiet but that works out well for them in boot camp because you know they will just keep quiet, pay attention, and do as they're told. She may be shy now but she will be forced to bond with her fellow recruits. My daughter is in her 4th week now and said she has two girls she's real close with already and have bonded with a few of the guys as well. Sounds like they really stick together. My daughter was also not very motivated. She's the type that if you tell her to do something she'd do it without giving you a hard time but never really did much without being told lol Again, these types do well in the service. Although I was nervous and hate her being gone (she's my one and only), I know this was a great decision for HER. I've talked to her briefly a few times now and she already sounds so much more mature!! She has even admitted that she wishes she would have listened to me and prepared herself better for the physical part of basic training. She was DEP for about 6 months and didn't do much PT at all on her own and to my surprise, the recruiters did not spend much time encouraging them to do so either. However, she seems to be holding up well so far. If there is one piece of advice I'd pass along is to tell her to make good use of the next 6 months while she is waiting to leave. It will only make it easier on her when she gets to Great Lakes.
