NHJ's mom-hang in there. We too had reservations about my daughter who is now an OS in Japan. she went in at 5 ft 2 and weighing 96 lbs! Not really athletic either. She was always head strong though and could hold her own and did just fine. They really stress team work. DEP will help her.

Good morning Navy moms : ) my daughter graduated on 11/1/13. She is currently in hold for A school at GL. My SR requested a care box of lotion, shampoo and female hygiene products after about 4/5 weeks at BC. So it is alright for you to ship those items to her, she will have to open them in front of her RDC. Absolutely no food products!! Remember to keep those cards and letters going. My sailor said that is what kept her going when times got tough, when she got sick and her feet hurt. I can say that joining the Navy was the best thing for her, she is now a strong confident woman, full of pride for herself, her country and her Navy brothers and sisters. Remember also to sign up for your PIR meet and Greet with sarge, you will get to meet the other moms and dads there. I now have several close friendships that I have made through the Navy, no one can support you like another Navy parent can. Blessings to all

My daughter is just out of high school, 18 yrs old.  So many other DEP's in her program already had some college/life under their belt.  She said early on at BC that she kept telling herself she was just gone at sumemr camp again, except summer camp only lasted 2 weeks!  She is attending church services.  I thought they might allow them a Christmas call home, but no such luck for us.  She says her bunk mate is greek and has been teaching her the greek alphabet.  She says the boys get them in more trouble thatn the girls do from talking.  Naturally, you get this many women together, there is a little bit of drama.  She has developed a cold, but is getting through it.  She says out of all the things the Navy provides, you think they would give a SR a little bottle of lotion!

Hi MooseBoots8.  My daughter is also USS Arizona Ship 14 DIV 061, PIR 1/17/14.  It is 4 tickets, but not really "tickets" at all.  Your SR has to put you on the "list" due to security restrictions.  That is my understanding.  This should be in the official form letter.

Hi everyone! My only daughter is in BC. She left on 11/19  just before her 23rd birthday and has missed Thanksgiving, Christmas and now New Years! Her PIR is 1/17/14 and I can NOT wait..she sounds so different on the phone..grown up and willing to talk..who is this young woman?  Her recruiter said that she will hold her head high, stand straight and we won't believe it's her..From the way she sounds on the phone, I have to agree. She sounds happy and even though I miss her like crazy, I know in my heart that the Navy is a good place for her to be.

I have two daughters. My eldest left for BC on Dec 10. As a parent we realize one day they will grow up but, when they are kids it seems so far away! But, here we are; having to let go of our ray of sunshine. My daughter was my "road dawg"; as we so fondly called her. She was becoming my friend; I had done all I could as a parent. Just as getting her to this point took; letting go and letting her fly is a process. If I would let it, missing my daughter would consume me. I know that isn't what she wants, and it surely isn't what I want. I had to stop seeing my daughter as a little girl, and start looking at her as a young adult making responsible choices. She is becoming all I hoped she would. This isn't easy but, I am proud of her and hope the Navy is everything she hopes it to be.

Thanks Wild Piglet, for the words of encouragement. I am a fairly new widow as well, just two years ago this December since we lost her Dad. So both our emotions were kind of raw this year. We still havent put up a Christmas tree since his death. That was a joint task that she and he always did together. I do like the volunteer service idea. I will bring it up with her and see if we can find something to get involved with. She loves to volunteer in our church nursery on Sundays, and she sings in the Sancuary choir and plays trombone in our church band. I thought about joining the band as a new trumpet player. That way I could hang out with folks who were close to her as well. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Hi revdcindy I think we all have fallen apart when our children have left for BC, deployment, etc. Keep yourself busy and know that BC won't last forever, when they are actually stationed somewhere you will be able to talk regularly and that helps. Keep yourself very busy....helps time go by.

Hi revdrcindy! My 21 yr old daughter just left for boot camp on December 9th.  Yes, it was very emotional as her departure date was a long time coming but I had to remain strong and confident for her.  She called on Christmas which was the best gift of all!  So stay strong for her as your brave sailor begins her journey entering  the Navy.  You've brought up a great girl!  Keep her motivated by writing letters and cards as this is what my daughter is asking for (oh yes, Facebook updates too), keep yourself busy by getting involved with her with some charity organizations before she leaves so she knows mom will be ok.  Keep up those volunteer activites when she leaves as it will help you get thru the time she's gone, holidays or not. So don't be sad, be proud as your raised her well.
