Remember if your sailor isnt employed file for unemployment benefits they must file in the state where their last duty station is.. also Kathleen have him go to usajobs.gov that is the federal gov't job board..jobs on there for all the different agencies of the feds.. federal prisons around the country are also in need and prefer former military.. he wants to build a profile and a resume on there it can be a pain but tell him to take his time ... govt resume's are not like civilian so put everything! his service record showing all his training and will be put to good use here.. if he hasnt gone to the VA have him go and get started there.. if he's not in college he could go and get BHA depending on which benefits he wants to use.. most of our guys that went in 6 or more years ago have the Montgomery GI bill that they had to pay into when they joined if they elected it  ALL are eligible for the post 911 gi bill which gives BHA... My son started out at the VA as a janitor and will soon be working in the physical plant because of his navy training..

Check out the INFO discussion from Deb above for some information on what to do after leaving the Navy....and I asked my son if there were time limits on benefits. The only one he is aware of (but he said there are probably others he is not aware of...) is that the physical you need to get any of your disablities noted needs to be very soon after your final day. He will probably learn more as he works with the people at UTSA handling his GI Bill and entering some veteran program where he "works"  while he goes to school.

Deb might know that answer, she's the one with the most "out of the Navy" experience here at the moment, we're all searching for answers, and posting what we find out...let us know what you find out, Kathleen, that's a great question.

Molly, thanks for coming aboard, it's a whole new world! But I think those of us here are good pioneers for figuring things out for others that follow.

TDM. I agree with you. What bothers me is the constant changes they keep making. Half time for every college I have ever attended is 6 hours now the va says the vets have to take 7 hours to be considered half time. Well that is easy to do when in your higher level classes but not when working towards them. So they have to take 9 hours which can be tough on a vet when working. Going to school. Family etc. Again my real gripe is the constant changes

I guess I see it differently. If a vet is going to school half time, he gets half of his BAH? and if he goes full time, he gets the full BAH? that seems fair to me. When I was on my dad's SS and Navy benefits, in college, I had to take 13 hours to get the credit and the check.

Is he involved in that program where they get paid $8. an hour to work, and half of that work has to be study?

It's worked out for my son to buy his home before he leaves the Navy, and he rents his extra bedrooms to meet the mortgage. UTSA is also a four year college in a military town, so their financial aid people are really on top of getting all the benefits to them.

So let the letter writing begin... Its officially they must take 7 credit hours to get 50% housing... which doesn't make sense because most 2 year colleges don't have a lot of 4 credit classes so this forces our vets to take 9 which then gives them 3/4 housing allowance so essentially the VA pays out more not less...  I realize that this is something the govt decided to give our vets they are not paying into it like they did the MGI bill however don't pump them all up thinking they served their country and now in gratitude our govt is giving them an education only to take it away piece by piece because they can't get their budget together...  argh..  Unfortunately a lot of guys counted on leaving the military and working part time.. getting their base housing and now are struggling.. and its not like they are all living high on the hog.. my son rents a room in a house and I bought him groceries the other day because he didn't have the money..  He could move home however we live 40 miles outside of Reno and the cost of gas would end up costing more in the long run   Mom's please read up on this stuff and get your sailor prepared..

So I am still investigating this but my son was told today that he has to now have 7 credit hours a semester or no base housing allowance... Those who are on facebook I would urge you to like The Post-9/11 GI Bill, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs group.. lots of good info.. I am so irritated right now all this mention of how hard vets are having it while going back to school. From what I am seeing its because the federal government keeps changing the rules... No base housing during summer months if they dont take classes...Fall semester ends on the 21st so next month only 1/2 base housing.. now they may have to take 7 hours  to get 1/2 base housing... of course they have to work since they can't count on their payments being on time either...

OMG!!! i could rant on about this!!!

Operation Mend...heard the first soldier, Aaron, tell a story on msnbc this morning. When his seven year old brother first visited him and saw his horrific injuries from an IED, Aaron asked him if he still saw his big brother as big and brave. The little boy thought a second, and then said "yeah, they tried to blow you up and couldn't."  Another great gift for someone this Christmas, donate to Operation Mend.
