Mom21sailor. How's your son liking Whidbey? Did his friends show up yet? Our recruiter flies in p-3's and can't wait to get back to doing that. He's done recruiting in February. Smee says C school is pretty easy. His squadron is shutting down for the holidays so he's going to be able to come home for Christmas and do some skiing which he misses - didn't go last year because of boot camp and P-cola.

He is up at Whidbey NAS as of Wednesday night.  He met some of the squadron on the night he arrived.  Yesterday he was pretty bored, I told him he should explore the base.  He was home from the 11th to the 23rd, we loved having him home but the saying goodbye again tears me apart.  He doesn't start C school until January, I told him to try and do some volunteering or its going to be a long 6 weeks.  He isn't shy but will not approach others, he has two buddies from Pensacola that are supposed to be going to Whidbey but even though they finished A school they haven't left yet.  I really hope he keeps busy while waiting, he said he won't be able to get his pass card to the hangar until Monday because of the holiday.

It looks beautiful, it makes our Virginia mountains look like foothills.  I think he will like the weather there, he doesn't care for hot, dry weather.  He will be turboprop, so it is unlikely that he will be on a carrier, the plane he will be maintaining is the p-3.  He graduates one week from tomorrow, I had read somewhere that they get a leave right after A school.  Do you know if that is a definite or is it a maybe?

That's ironic.  With all the bases along the East coast, you'd think he'd have a better chance of going that direction.  I'm new to this Navy gig also but as I understand it, air squadrons are land-based.  When they are needed, they'll be transferred to ships.  Smee's squadron in "attached" to the Nimitz which is up in a WA dry dock.  He fully expects to go out to sea once he's trained.  And one of the reasons he chose helicopters was to get a chance to go to most any of the ships, not just the carriers with the jets.  At least your son'll probably have a chance to stop by your home on his way across the country.  He'll get more leave and will be able to show you around the Whidbey area.  I think it's gorgeous.

Well, he got his orders on Monday, not written but verbal for now.  He will be going to Whidbey Island and be assigned to a land-based squadron.  Not what I had thought he would be doing but he seems very happy with it.  I just wish he were closer we live on the Easter side of the country.  I am sorry about you son smeesmom.  Yes, hopefully he will be busy with C school.

He wasn't able to move in with a friend so has to stay where he is for awhile.  Today he starts C school so maybe that'll divert his attention.  I guess class is from 2-10pm.  He's in San Diego.  I hope your son ends up in a place as nice as that.

I hope he gets a better roommate, where is he stationed?  My son was fortunate at A school.  His roommate and he get along well and both keep the room in great inspection shape.  He was feeling a little down the other night when I talked to him, a lot of the guys in his bootcamp division are getting their orders and he is getting anxious.  But I reminded him that he is halfway through school, and his orders will come before he knows it.

Fortunately my cousins live very near his base so they include him in many activities. He has made a few friends in his work place. He has asked his chief to help him change rooms and maybe share with a fellow worker. He's only 19 and they have him bunking with a 30-year old who has a girl friend over most weekends and has been responsible for them failing several room inspections. Cross your fingers that he's moved into a better situation. We also took a truck out to him so he can get off base. Overall, I'm incredibly proud of how mature he's sounding and how well he's getting along in this new environment.

Yes, I will.  Until he phased up and classed up he was pretty bored, but then he started to meet people and that's when he started to like it.  Smeesmom, is your son getting out at all?

Valtameri is right.  As the mother of a shy one, I like to hear that he's met guys to do stuff with.  He seems to be adjusting to base life and has just found out he's to start C school Oct. 31.  His air wing? is shutting down over Christmas so he's put in for leave.  They have to keep 30 people there so as a junior person he won't know how many or which days he'll get off.  I hope both of your sons are able to get home.  I didn't realize C school was only weeks long and not months.

ProudADwife, I keep wondering about you.  By now, you must know where you're going and I hope you've been able to successfully get your move underway.
