janieflorida, do you know if they are ever allowed to leave the base? My reservist son just accepted a one-year active deployment (starting in Feb '18) and is hoping to get to snorkel with whale sharks just once while he's there.

My sailor is in Djioubiti.  Hot and more hot.  Tough deployment

Oh my, just Tenn Navy Mom and I are here and I know her son is safe and sound in the US for now. Mine is now in Africa and we are doing a lot of praying for his safe return in the Fall.

Anyone else out there?

I wonder if there is anyone active on this group? My son will deploy in the Spring and know I will need contact with family members who have experienced the Africa deployment.

I'm not a new Navy Mom but my son has only been deployed twice in his 13+ years in. Luckily, I was pretty oblivious to the danger until he came home and I heard stories.

This time, I'm more aware of danger from the beginning. I know I will spend a lot of time on my knees.

Thanks a lot tenn navy mom. We just got the news yeaterday that my sailor is not going to djibouti after all. He is still going to Africa, but for operation unity assist. He's leaving sun 4 Norfolk, then to fort jackson, then back to Norfolk. Will be about a months worth of traing. Then reports directly to Africa, location to be determined. It is very scary. We are concerned yet confident that he will be safe and sound. He returns end of may. Thanks for your tips. Anymore you may think of will be much appreciated!!

Just found out my son is being deployed to Africa to camp lemmonier. He's heading to Norfolk this weekend and most likely, then straight to djibouti. Any tips on necessities to bring or any other tips? Thanks.
