IDC mom glad to hear your sailor is safe.  There seems to be a lot of restrictions when dealing with the kids.  such a shame.

Tenn Navy Mom, son returned after 7 months in west Africa. Thank God, it was a mostly uneventful deployment. Most traumatic experience was the camp cat he had adopted disappeared. No major illnesses or injuries to treat; dislocated ankle, poke in the eye, and split lip. Their pet goat did get wrapped up in the barbed wire but wouldn’t let son suture him.

Son did do a toy drive, with wonderful results thanks to many Navy moms. Due to safety concerns, they were not allowed to stop and interact with the children but handed them to kids as they drive by.

He will PCS in December. Praying that he will not deploy while on shore duty the next three years!!!

Thank you, everyone, for your comments!

Hopefully, my son will be able to go snorkeling through a "Navy-approved" field trip. ;-) Migration patterns bring A LOT of whale sharks along Djibouti's coast during the winter months. Snorkeling with them is on my son's bucket list and he's hoping he will get to take advantage of their proximity to him while he's there.

I'm already following this Facebook page:

Are there any other ones families can follow/join?

The sailors can go on organized liberty as approved by the navy. They have a Facebook page

Jensue, did you ever get an answer to your question about your son being able to swim with whale sharks?

Just curious about the safety issues in that part of Africa.

Just looking back and thanking God time hasn't really stopped. My son is five months into his deployment. Hoping he will be home before his birthday in October.

Dear Jensue:  I hope you got my comment about R&R. I'm not sure where the Whale sharks are.  We have them occasionally here in the Florida Keys.  But as I said they do have organized recreation that I'm sure he will learn about.

My sailor heads out with his marines on deployment soon, and they will be spending at least a month in Djioubiti. Doesn't know what they will be doing. I'm hoping humanitarian aid or training some troops.
