Sally, Point Mugu is about 60 miles NW of Los Angeles. There are several State Parks nearby and also Channel Islands National Park so there will be a lot for him to do in the area. J&Krystal, I don't really understand the 3 years seat duty. I doubt that he will be on the water for 3 years straight, but probably assisgned to a ship. His rate is AS. He graduates A school a week from today. I'm going to drive down to Pensacola to pick him up.

Oh, Jake chose Point Mugu in CA, and passed up sea duty in Japan. I was very surprised. I thought he wanted to "see the world". Well, he will be in Point Mugu (shore duty) for a couple years, and then 3 years sea duty. I believe he will get around quite a bit. Actually, I think he was pretty smart when he chose Point Mugu. It looks like a very nice area. And, I have never been to CA; maybe I will go sometime in the next year or two.

It does depend on what base they are stationed and how much space there is in the barracks... The criteria for who is in the barracks has changed at Whidbey several times since my son has been there. Best for your sailor to check with his command as to what is required.

Hi, gonemad. I think I recognize you from PIR 8/7 group. Is your son still in A school?

Our local high school has a Veteran's Day program every year. I submitted my son's, dad's and father in law's pictures for the tribute. They do an awesome job. The band performs and the choir sings then they always read a poem and tribute that has been writing by students from our school. I always have tears in my eyes as soon as the program starts when they escort the veterans to their seats. Every year they also have a bagpipe player that plays "Taps" and if you are not already crying this will send you over the edge but I wouldn't miss it for anything. Happy Veteran's Day and God bless our troops and keep them safe.

Great news!!!! My son just called, he got his orders and will be going to Jacksonville just as he hoped.

Krystal my son finished A school about six weeks ago and he said he will be in C school from December until June. If I can be of any help please let me know.

As long as he continues to score well he will qualify for more school... and then some rates and airplanes require more schooling... He may just stay where he is for all his schooling.

Hi, Jenny. Jake arrived in Pensacola in 8/9/09. He went through INDOC, AWAT and ATT and then started A school shortly thereafter. The AS rate is perfect for him - he's like to have dirt under his fingernails. I have not visited yet, but I'm going a few days before Thanksgiving, and then he can ride back with me and prepare to go to Point Mugu. Point Mugu is about 65 northwest of LA. I was kind of alarmed when Jake said he would be in LA for 2 years, but I checked the atlas, and it looks like a beautiful area. I hope all of you feel that same way that I do - US NAVY has been really good for Jake, I think Jake will be an asset to the NAVY.
By the way, Jenny, thanks for posting all the rates. All this stuff is still kind of confusing for me, and that is very helpful.

Hi. I'm glad this group got started. My son is AS, graduating from A school in Pensacola the day before Thanksgiving. He has really enjoyed his time there. He just got his orders this week. He will be heading to Point Mugu, CA. Yeah, I know, no one has ever heard of it, right? I hadn't either, but after a bit of research, I think it looks pretty good.
