OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I will start off by introducing my sailor, Victoria, who is headed towards the AT (Aviation Electronic Technician) rating. Victoria started boot camp in early March and had her PIR on May 29. She moved over to the A School at Great Lakes the following week to take the basic electronics course.
As I understand it, sailors will be selected for either the AT or AE rating at the end of the basic electronics course. Also as I understand it, the basic electronic course is a self-paced computerized course. At the end of this training, Victoria should go to Pensacola for her regular A School training.
It appears that there is a fair amount of math ... not Victoria's strong suit. The good news is that she has found shipmates who can help her. -

My son, Stephen, just had his PIR June 19. He was awarded the MOAA - Military Officers Association Award. He moved across street for A school last week so is still doing the INDOC. He will be in the ATT which he said would last 21 days. I see it is longer in the list on this site but am guessing that includes the INDOC time. I have been researching online and see there are a lot of jobs under the Aviation Electronics label.
I am really excited for my son as he has so many opportunities for his future and he has really taken to being a sailor. -

Congratulations on yor son receiving the MOAA. That is an honor. You must be very proud of him.
It is great to "meet" another in Victoria's field. She moved over in early June but did not start the course for another week or so. I would love to learn more so if you find out something, please post it. -

HI, Gena. The Navy life is a great way to expand your horizons. While I grew up, I lived on both coasts as well as Texas, Germany and Italy. I learned to appreciate different cultures and different ways to do things. The most important thing to remember is that all places have their good aspects and some that are not so good. Keep an open mind and appreciate the new things you are learning. You will develop an appreciation of new foods and new customs.
Post your question about moving in the general discussion. I understand your husband wanting you close by but it will get expensive and you won't see him as often as you may like. I would recommend waiting until he gets to Pensacola.
PIR is coming up soon! Enjoy it. -

My husband had PIR on July 17 and is now at Great Lakes for 6 weeks for training in Aviation Electronics. It sounds like he might head to Pensacola after that, but not sure yet.
As for his background ... he's a bit older (28), has a bachelors degree in history & political science, and is done with "all but thesis" for a masters degree in political science. he's wanted to enlist in the military for the past 6 years or so. I had my reservations about it, so he tried so other things (grad school, other jobs) but still had the desire to enlist, so he finally started looking into that, and there was a lot of back and forth and changes and what not, but finally he is in.
Also, he's in the Navy Reserve. -

Maggie, my granddaughter was at GL but now is in Pensacola. She is still on hold for her next class.
BabyBlues, if you do the planning, there will be no disputes about what will be done for the wedding. I would imagine it is difficult planning a wedding when dates are so much in flux for starting classes. -

Hi. My fiance is in Great Lakes for A-School. He is going into Avionics Electrician. As of right now he is supposed to be there for 7 weeks and then come home for two and then go to Pensacola for more schooling. We are trying to plan a wedding around all this also. Or I should say I am doing the planning all he will have to do is show up. haha. He did say they are backed up right now.

Hi, my son Chris is still in BC but his enlisting rate is AV. I have 2 questions: 1. Does everyone in AV do this initial self directed training at GL? If not, where else? 2. What are the locations of the A schools afterwards. I believe there are 6 -- including Pensacola, but cannot recall where they all are.
A quick comment to Baby Blues re the wedding plan: my niece and her husband are both in the Navy. They got married in March 09 -- and had the added complication of both obtaining a weekend of leave at the same time! Good luck to you! -
