My husband is currently in indoc for A school for ET since he just graduated last weekend. From what I've read on here, it sounds like he will have to get his live ashore approved before he can request base housing, but someone he graduated with was already able to get into base housing. They just went to the housing office and were pretty much given a house that day or the next day for their wife to move in to. His live ashore was still going to have to be approved for him to live their of course. However, when my husband went their yesterday, they told him that his live ashore would need to be approved first. Has anyone else had experience getting in to housing before their spouse's live ashore was approved? I know I could get in to an apartment and live there now, but from the ones I've looked in to, we wouldn't have enough BAH to cover the rent/utilities AND gas for him to get to and from school every day, so base housing just made the most sense. Thanks!

Well, my question was answered today. It looks like we'll for sure have to wait for his live ashore approval, as I suspected. Oh well, maybe it won't take too terribly long, haha!
Hi Abby, I was reading your older post and was wondering how long after your hubby had his. PIR were you able to move up? And how was the move money reimbursed? My SR is graduating soon and is going to be in A school there for AECF, not sure if it's FC or ET yet, he probably found out today. I'm just trying to plan about how long before me and the kids can move. Thanks in advance :)
Well, his PIR was June 21st and I moved up July 28th. He had to wait nearly 3 weeks until he was phase 2 (Holiday hold due to 4th of July added a couple of days) before he could request live ashore and put in for base housing. As soon as he hit phase 2 and talked to housing, we had a house. Unfortunately, since we had them move our stuff (which I would still recommend) we had to wait for the paperwork to go through with the movers. They didn't actually pick up our things until August 12th and didn't deliver until August 18th. We still got some traveling expenses money and dislocation allowance, but I believe we didn't get that until the end of August. But, yes, we went without furniture for 3 weeks (and we have a baby too)! It really wasn't that bad since we drove and just packed the car with as much as would fit (including some pots and pans)... Oh and our apartment didn't come with a microwave haha! But it was totally worth it though since his live ashore got approved just a few days after I got here :)
Thanks Abby, they eases my mind a little, I was worried it was going to take a lot longer. Another quick question, how is the area? How's the base housing? Also, I'm thinking we might need to live in regular rental house, do you recommend any certain areas to move to or stay away from?

Sorry, I haven't been checking my email very often! Um.. Libertyville, Lake Bluff and Gurnee are pretty nice. There are areas in Waukegan and North Chicago that aren't so nice. Base housing is not too bad. I would recommend it for sure. Some people say they can save money by getting off base housing and pocketing the extra BAH, but I did a little research and could really only come up with a couple of places that didn't take all of the BAH (and then some!), and with those, they were about 20 minutes from base, so we would have been spending the excess BAH on gas.

I second everything Abby just said.
