Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Hi,  Is there a restriction for civilian clothes for the men with shorts?  I was looking at Territory Ahead, there looks like a great couple of pairs of shorts- I just not sure if there are any guide lines?  Wanted to be sure before I order them?

Here is the BIG update with my Sailor Cooper. Saw him Friday upon arrival- Saturday for him to get a car from me to drive. Then not a word. 2:20 phone rings- security saying he doesn't have a pass to come in our development? The pass is on the car? Hmmm? Does he have the car still? Got up all is well! Could not go to sleep- got up went to the market to buy yummy things for breakfast- Peppered Bacon, eggs, fresh fruit whole milk ( he looks skinny) Came back grab bags, head to kitchen. Go to tell him a delicious all American breakfast is just minutes away! Surprise !!! He is gone!

He took off with friends! Oh well, I am glad- I wish I could make him stay and eat and chat! He is the oldest now- he is really the youngest, you wouldn't know though! Maybe tomorrow? I hope to grab time before he goes first of next week. Of course he will be here Christmas Eve- the house will be to full to pay attention just to him, I want to measure his face and print it in my brain. Grab him for a hug and log his height, his smell. Much like when he was born.

Yes, again I feel like the 8th grader by the phone, oh well.

My best and my prayers to you all tonight. Happy Holidays!

Got a satellite phone call from my son! He's floating for a few more weeks, then maybe back to base. He will get his Christmas presents waiting on him, then I will take down my tree!. He LOVES what he is doing, so that makes it all easier!! Merry Christmas to all. When he was home on leave, we just gave him some nights to be "available" for us...it worked well, and he planned his other nights out around those. I am writingmy senator/congressmen about the vests. I think it needs to be looked at. I wonder if the Veteran's Administration can help?

I just want to say thank you to you ladies ... I'm all "sniffy" reading your messages of understanding & support.
Tammy - i think you're absolutely right about he holidays. We put Christmas on hold here until he for home. He said was going to help us decorate everything, so we waited. We ended up doing it all last night while he was out with friends - but at least it looks festive now, which helps a lot!

Kathy - I know, but at least college students aren't (usually) on the other side of the world, only able to come home once a year! :)

Chris - I'm indeed "hangin' in there" lol! Thanks for the reminder! :-)

Mom - thanks for reminding me why I come here, this wonderful site with all these wonderful understanding women!

*hugs* to you all for putting out the effort to help make me feel better... and to understand a bit more! Bahrain Moms are the best! :D

Like the Brits said, "Keep Calm, Carry On"
Like us Yanks say, "Hang in there baby!"

Yes! We are on stand by here! I feel like an 8 th grade girl waiting for the phone to ring! I will grab any moment he has available to do anything! BIG family get together today, he came in his uniform to church- very nice! Perhaps he will be in his bed here in the am? I did not even ask. We will see where the wind blows him! So happy for any time!

Chris got in at 0130 & hung out with is that day & then spent a lot of time trotting. Alex & I agreed before ours got home to set our minds to be grateful for any time we got. BUT, both of us dropped everything if we did get included in his plans. We laughed about being a couple of truly pathetic people. lol

Miss Suzanne,

Don't beat yourself up!  It IS a hard transition, for all of us.    And if you can't vent to us, who can you and they will understand?  :)

Why don't you say "Hey Michael, we are going to have a family dinner  >such and such> and what would you like me to cook special for you?"  He MIGHT get the hint, if not, at least you'll have a little time with him! :)

Comment by Miss Suzanne on December 18, 2011 at 3:44pm
*sigh* do you know where we can buy some? Trying so hard not to be hurt. The only time he's been home was the first night he got here - & only b/c he didn't get home until almost midnight! Since then he's had friends over every second, even spending the night crashed on his floor in his room...but NO time for us alone. :(
I know I need to get a grip and just deal with it. He needs to spend time with his friends, and i need to understand that. I'm just praying that it won't be like this his entire leave. :/

I'm so sorry to complain, ladies. Its just that this is the first time that I've ever been in this type of situation, and I'm struggling to deal with it, and not be really hurt by it.

Darn teenagers! My mom DID curse me to have one just like me, and apparently its working! lol!
