I'm trying to revert back to discussions over whether or not to keep his cell service on as he will be over there for a year and a half. I'm wondering, since we've set up Google Voice and he will need an international phone, is there any benefit at all to keeping his phone service on vs halted?
We've used Facetime on his last deployment, which is the apple equivalent I think. We haven't had any problems. The only thing with Facetime is that you have to be connected to wifi, which for our son means he has to be in a wifi area which doesn't give him too much privacy. We do a lot of imessaging, which is free between iphones. I think there are other apps that provide the same service.
Anyone use Google Voice to keep in touch with your sailor? It's free and seems to be a great way to reach them, but wondering if there are any negatives to using it.
My son just arrived in Bahrain Wednesday his first deployment. he is an MP. I actually got a phone call this morning and I could barely speak thru all the happy tears. We had a wonderful talk and I feel much better now after hearing his voice. I know we will Skype and talk more over the next 2 years. I found this site right after and this will help me get thru as well.
Connersmom, that is great news! My son just got there so I have a while before I can do the dance for myself, but I will be dancing for you, and praying for his safe return home. Praying for all of our sailors still over there too!!
The hardest part was coordinating with my sailor and choosing the dates. She lives off base so I was able to stay with her. Just watch the airline rates for a while. It's a long trip, especially in coach.
Newsubmom- I coordinated my visit with my daughters days off. The Navy tour of Manama was about 1/2 day and I don't know if they still offer it. The trip was long, expensive, short and totally worth it. I feel much better about her being there now that I've seen it. You might want to go during the Winter months when the temperature is down to 80
ConnersMom... Congratulations. Still waiting to hear if ours will be able to come for a visit in the Fall. It has been over a year since we have seen him. He has another year in the sand.
