OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches,museums,malls on and off base,the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.
New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs,laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.
Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.
Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music,movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base.This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain,middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.

Hi Sylvia, I think it has more to do with what phone she has, not yours. They have to get a phone that can call from overseas. But anyway, most people Skype for free rather than try to call. Our daughter texts us on VIBER, an app you can get on a smart phone. She also e-mails a lot. Hope this helps.

i have a question? does anyone knows how can i contact my daughter with out getting my bill high? i have tmobile and the charges are to expensive? what carrier should i go for? my daughter is in Bahrain

Hi Robin,
My son left for Bahrain on 11/10. His plane left Norfolk at 10pm that Tuesday night. We heard from him again on Thursday night 11/12 when he got to the hotel.

Hi Courageous, it depends on what kind of communications your son has available. Our daughter got an app for her phone called VIBER so she can text us from overseas, so she let us know where she was and when she arrived. But then it was very busy for her as they did an orientation and trained her for her new position over there. During orientation she had time to email us a few times, but once she started working we don't hear from her more than once a week. I know lots of moms say they Skype with their kids but my daughter doesn't have that on her computer. Thing is, they work 10 - 12 hr shifts and then there is a big time difference - 8 hrs. for me. So it would not be the easiest thing to coordinate Skype times anyway. But what really matters is what kind of communication he has. Some kids get phones that allow them to call overseas so he could call anytime.

Skyped with my daughter this morning for an hour. I think she is scared but doesn't want me to know. She is saying she is excited. Says she plans to travel a good bit over there. I hope she does. She joined to see the world!

Hi Kayla's Mom, no my daughter said they are told to wear clothes that are looser and more modest than what people are used to in the west. Things like peasant blouses, but no super tight jeans. No shorts or tank tops. She says the only place you have to cover your head is if you go to visit or tour a mosque.

While over there are the girls instructed to dress in traditional middle eastern dress? Do they have to keep there heads covered?

Hi Kayla's Mom, I have a Kayla that has been in Bahrain since Feb 2014 she is a E4. It was scary at first. she has adjusted and during well. I am sure your daughter will too.This site is really helpful. all we can do is support one another through the Navy journey
