OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches,museums,malls on and off base,the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.
New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs,laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.
Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.
Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music,movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base.This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain,middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.

Hi Ryan's mom,
My son has been in Bahrain now for 3 months and he is having a great time. I know that might be maddening to read, and to my surprise he is taking advantage of everything the base has to offer, making new friends and trying to enjoy being a sailor.
I too felt like you did when we found out where he was being shipped off to. On a lighter note, my son text me weekly, Facetime's with me when he can and keeps the lines of communication open. Its so much more than I had before he joined the Navy.
I'll keep you and your sailor in my prayers for a steady transition.
Be strong mom and it will all work out for your sailor :)

One of my worst nitrates is coming true, having my sailor son deployed to middle east, Behrain. I am so worried. One hears so many stories of bombings ECT to our military bases and personnel. How has it been for your sailors? Do they feel safe? Any suggestions to send with him. Thank you all for your support!

One big tourist attraction there is the "Tree of Life" - one lone tree on the island that is estimated to be over 400 yrs. old. With a chuckle my daughter told us that there is a museum and gift shop next to the lone tree!

Wow, yes lots of green! My daughter says it is rare there and takes lots of watering. She has been there since last Sept. and only seen it drizzle once. Thanks for the info, Beth, regarding the other base. I had heard it was pretty primitive. The other base sounds really nice, and I am grateful that my daughter gets to be near it. It is hard enough adjusting to life there. One nice thing she has told me - that locals come to sell crafts and hand made items on the base. She has gotten some beautiful tapestries and wooden carved items.

Lots of green, both on base and the surrounding residential neighborhood.
Color guard preparing to raise my dad's memorial flag in front of NAVCENT HQ.(His flag has flown over all of CryptoGirl's duty stations.) Plenty of green in the background.

Irene: I did the same thing with google maps looking at the area where my son's base is. Unlike when we look at a place in the US..... It was ALL BROWN SAND!! No grass. No green. Literally brown everywhere. I asked my son if that was for real & he said YES! Haha. No green. He said something about the nicer navy base up north having planted some plants?? to make it look nice but not at his base.

BethD: my son deploys to the ugly crappy one south of the nice one! Haha. They aren't stationed there, they "deploy" there for several months at a time. No more than 6 months. While there, his accommodations are a storage pod ( he gets it all to himself ) and it comes with a door, a cot & AC. No bathroom. They share a common bathhouse. It has a mess hall & room with ping pong & wifi. It's actually a Bahraini Air Force base that they stay on. He's been 4 times. When they leave the base they have to travel in groups & avoid main roads. There is a bus they can take up to the nice navy base. It's about 1.5hr away. Hope that helps.

One fun thing we did recently is look up our daughter's address in Bahrain on Google earth. It was fun to see her building and what the neighborhood looked like - in general, that is. The pictures there are not as extensive as the ones of U.S. addresses. But we got a kick out of seeing Starbucks logos with Arabic writing, and other American fast food places there!
