Cellphone Company in Japan (7th Fleet Band) - AT&T, Verizon or Sprint OR a Japanese Cellphone Carrier?

Hello, All!  Hope everyone's well.  My daughter is currently in Navy Music School in Virginia and she will be assigned to the 7th Fleet Band in Yokusuka, Japan.  Does anyone know what cellphone company she should sign up with that will work in Japan and will also be least costly for her?  She currently is on my family plan with Verizon and I was thinking of moving to Sprint because I know that Sprint offers unlimited data and messaging - but if there's a much better choice out there, please let me know.  Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Sesalle!  It's good to meet you.  My husband and I was there last week to celebrate her bday and we were very happy that the family got to spend time together.  Hope you're having a good time in VA.

Hi Sunymom - my daughter spent 3 years in Japan with the 7th Fleet Band.  Just like here in the states, there are different cell phone plans over in Japan.  The last year or so my daughter had an iphone that she bought over there.  One of the apps was something like Text Now and she and I could text back and forth, with no charge (if you have unlimited texting on your phones)  I never called her cell phone because we always used Skype to talk back and forth.  We also used Facebook for messages.  If I needed to reach her I'd just send a message on FB or Skype and she would call me at a set time.  I know at the time she was there, her Japanese cell phone did not work in different ports outside of Japan, so she had a tract phone that she could by a special card for and use it at different ports she was in.  I have Verizon and she had the Japanese plan.  Once she gets there, have her talk to the other band members there, or even her sponsor, they will recommend which one is best for what she wants.  Many of the ports they visit have internet cafes so my daughter took her iPad or laptop with her and we could Skype.  If you have not tried Skype yet, set it up, it's free and great.  We still use it regularly instead of using the phone even though she is now stationed at Navy Band Great Lakes.  Just nice to talk to her and see her while we chat.

Thanks for the info. Kathy C.  Maybe I won't stress about this too much right now then - it does make sense that I should wait until she gets there and maybe she can figure out what the best plan she should get locally.  Skype and texting sounds great so maybe that's what we'll end up doing.  Once again, thanks for the tip!

When my friend worked at Disneyland Tokyo, he used a complay called Softbank. It was what all the other Disney people used. I'm not sure what other options are out there, but I do know of that one!
