I cycled through a few different ideas and ended up with this lantern with a blue 'flameless' candle that I got on Amazon (they are not easy to find!), thanks to one of the ladies that posted it here a couple months back. I bundled all of the letters I got from SR and his GF during their time in bootcamp and put them in there. I plan to use it as sort of a shadow box for other things from his time in the Navy as well. I have a photo of SR and his GF next to it and on the other side is the Blue Candle Poem.
Call me dumb but what is the blue candle? I have never heard of this but I am new to the Navy world so a lot of learning from my part.
Hi Hollie - nothing dumb about your question! Here's a link that will tell you all about the significance of the blue candles:
We would NEVER call someone dumb on here. The Blue candle is part of the traditions in the Navy. For what it's worth I was a Navy wife and never heard of it till I became a Navy Mom.
You can buy a blue candle or decorate a regular candle with blue to lite when your sailor is on deployment, or has a major event coming up. Some lite it for BS21, some for all of BC. It's completely up to you how you want to use it or even if you want to use it. There is a TON of information in the thread so if you take the time to read it you will find information and ideas as well.
Northwoodsmom - love the items you made. Way to go Navy Mom.
Phoenixmom, very nice.
I love all these ideas! I went with this one that I found on Etsy.
That is neat!! I had meant to post the other day that if anyone is near an Aldi's, they had some of their metal lanterns available for sale at the store near my location.
That is very nice... I really like Etsy also.
Hello All! I got my "blue candle" light from Etsy. Makes me so happy to look at it! I know it's silly but makes me feel closer to my SR who is entering week 4 at BC! Prayers and well wishes to all our babies and their families.
0914mel - That is very lovely. Thank you for sharing. For anyone that might not be as crafty, this is a nice option.
