Hi all!  Our daughter left from Portland, OR on 8/22/12.  Got the call later that evening that she had arrived safely in GL.  Just wanted to make contact with anyone else out there who had a child leave around that same day! Now that we are really in this, I am a little more freaked out than I thought I would be! Thanks to you all!  It is making all the difference reading your posts!

My son also arrived at GLakes on 8/22/12.  I am with you on the freaked out part.  I didn't realize it would be so hard because he was always off goofing around with his friends so I figured I could just pretend he was with them   Didn't realize how not being able to talk to the kid would tear me up! Can't wait for the form letter so at least I can feel like I have some contact with him.  Where was this feeling mentioned in "Parenting" books?

I am right there too! My son arrived at BC on 8/21. I have already received the box which was one of the hardest things for me. I thought I had prepared myself for this but apparently it didn't work. I miss him so much and I am still waiting for the letter so I can mail him my letters that I have already written.

Hi there, my daughter arrived at GL on the 21st.  I can't believe it has only been a few days.  Am also a little more freaked out than I thought I would be.  My son went off to university the week before but it isn't the same.  I can text him and he's only 2 hrs away so I can visit/he can come home easily.  Am right there with you from here in Indiana.

College is way easier even when it is far away because they can still call.  It wasn't even an hour after dropping my daughter off that she was calling to tell me things.  I hate the not knowing how the son is doing & can't believe I miss text messages.

I definitely agree it's the lack of info that has me the most anxious!  She is 20 and was away at school for the past two years before deciding that the Navy was the path for her.  But my husband and I were talking last night that we could still talk to her and know how her days were going.  This communication cold turkey thing is harder than I thought it would be!

No doubt.  We missed the call saying he arrived & instead had a voice mail on the cell.  I can't believe how many times I have replayed it just to hear his voice.  So corny!

Not corny at all. I would do the same thing.

You ladies are funny. LOL I was where you all are not so long ago. Your kids will be just fine and at least you know where they are. :) I am sure they are all missing the comforts of home as they all do. Believe me BC is not the navy its just they navy's way of turning them from civilians into sailors. As soon as you get your box and form letters you will all feel much better. The best part is when you start getting letters but will probably take a few weeks. Personally I think my son would have knocked me out if I called the recruiter for an address or to see how he was doing. Just be patient and keep busy. I work full time went to the gym and worked on my hobbies and made my 8 weeks go quick. Believe me they want to graduate BC more than you want to go to PIR. They work really hard toward that goal. Once they go to 'A" school you will have more contact with them. My son is assigned to ship and hardly gets to call or send us emails. You just get used to it and look forward to the next call or email. Good luck to you and your SR's

Hi! My son also arrived on 8/21. Been a little different around here but i know he is safe. I cant say getting his box was easy though. Going to start counting fridays!!

You got his box already?  No box, no letter so far and she also arrived on the 21st.  We are just down the road in Indiana so it didn't have far to go.

I read on another board that sometimes the addresses the recruiter give are wrong.
I understand that. I think I'll call kyles recruiter Monday and see what he says. I really want to mail something too!!
