My SR arrived on Sept. 17th and failed the first 2 PT by seconds. When she left for MEPS she was sick, we even told her recruiter a week before she shipped out. They sent her anyway. This morning I got a letter from her dated from Sept. 30th informing me she failed but would get 5 tries to pass. I believe they moved her into STEP, but she did not tell us that. I am surprised we never even received a phone call!  Where can I find information on the program, or have any of you gone through this? It looks like she failed the 2nd PT on the 25th and then was told she had five more chances...

Good Morning Ma'am this site will explain the failing of the PFA. See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training (FIT).  in it will give info on the STEP as well.

Ship 4 houses both integrated and all male divisions. Ship 4 is also the RCU-Recruit Convalescent Unit-where sick or injured recruits go to heal and be cycled back into another TG. (See Recruit Convalescent Unit (RCU) and join RCU SHIP 04 DIV 741 for more information.) The STEP division is also located here. Recruits who fail both attempts at the initial PFA by only a few seconds are placed in STEP, which is located in Ship 04 DIV 746 in hopes that they will pass in a few days or be separated. (See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training ....) The FIT Division is also located here. Recruits who have failed the Official Physical Fitness Assessment (most often the swim or run) are sent here for intensive training in order to pass the test prior to having Battle Stations-21 (BST). (See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training ... and join fit program for more information.) When writing to a recruit in a FIT Division, use the above address for this Ship, but put "FIT Division- Male" or "FIT Division-Female" in place of the Division Number until you know which 700 division number to use. The FAST and PASS programs are also here. (See http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=54872.)

I'm hoping someone will see this and reply, since its from Oct. 2019 and we are in July 2020 My daughter has been at GL since May 20. After quarantine she was out into Div. 236, approximately 3 weeks into training she and several others were isolated another 2 weeks because of a CoVid scare. After coming out she was placed with Div. 254. Who by the way graduate tomorrow. Anyway, she did not pass second PFA run, and this week did not pass her final PFA run by 25 seconds. She has been set back 3 weeks and put into another group, Div. 282 with PIR date of Aug. 20. My question is will she get time to work on run time now that she has been set back? I have read that FIT instructors do help with those that fail the final run. Or, will she continue training like nothing ever happened? Thanks

She is in a regular division, not a FIT division. She is getting training just as she did in her previous division, but she is aware of her need to push herself so hopefully she will push herself to make it. Encourage her to use strategies such as "chase the rabbit" to make it next time.

Hi Dennis1960 - I noticed your message in the discussion area of BC Mom group. I am just checking in with you. How is your daughter doing? Has she been able to contact you? She is coming up on a PIR of Aug 20th so I just wondered how things were going for her.

Zyphere -  If she is being given more chances she may have been transferred to the FIT program.

If she has failed all her tries then she will be separated (let's hope that's not the case).  This would be "SEP" not "STEP".  If she got moved to Ship 5 for separation she would have called you and told you this.

Here's the link to the Ship 5 group - it has info on codes to re-enlist:

Ship 5

And here's the link to the FIT group:

The lack of a phone call is why I think she was moved into the STEP program. She is in Ship 4 DV 744 according to the return address. I thought they could only go into FIT if they passed the first PT, but if they failed both attempt by Seconds they would be placed into STEP for another chance before SEP... I am so confused.

DIV 744 is the division for a PFA failure. That is the division that a recruit goes to if they fail the first PFA. Someone must have felt that there was a reason to let her keep trying.

Is there anyone who has any info based on experience with their SR? She was definitely not in SEPS as of the the date of the letter.  She’s on Ship 4.  She is not in DIV 741 so not in RCU.  I think it’s too soon to be in FIT if I understand the process correctly , it seems like they go into FIT if they fail to pass the 2nd PFA and STEP if they miss passing the initial by only a few seconds.  So we think she may be in STEP but that’s DIV 746 and that’s not her address.

The reference material listed speaks about the existence of STEP but has no detail to speak of.  She was very specific about getting 5 tries.  Anyone with an SR who went through STEP?

DIV 744 is the division for a PFA failure.
