My son shipped out on 6/18. We got the obligatory call that night, and just received his box yesterday. So, everything seemed to be going well. Just a few minutes ago, I get this call from IL. I thought it was a vendor I work with, so, I almost didn't answer it. I am glad I did...it was my son. He was hurried, asking me if he is allergic to penicillin. I told him not that I was aware of. He said his paperwork had a copy from the pediatrician (he had to get clearance for having been on ADHD meds 10 years ago...almost didn't get in because of it) and there was a note that was unclear as to whether he was allergic to penicillin or not. I told him he had been on amoxicillion and other penicillin based antibiotics over the years, so, I don't think he was allergic. He said thank, I said I love you, and that was it.

But now my mind is racing. What???? First of all, is something wrong? Is he sick or injured? Secondly, is it a bad sign to be hearing from him so soon? Back to my first question, is something wrong? Why would they need to know about penicillin.

Help. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Are there standard medical checks, or shots, or something that goes on?

Aack!!!

Good morning JMom, I have only been at this "Navy Mom" thing for 7 weeks, but they do all their medical screenings that first week.  There are tests, questions, and shots, etc.  They are probably just making sure they have all his correct medical information, they go over all the records with a find tooth comb - allergies, or possible allergies, are taken very seriously.  I wouldn't worry, honest.  Believe me, I know that is so much easier said than done.

Your son is in fine hands :-)

He's fine.  They all get a penicillin shot the first week they are there.  And a flu shot too.  My son said the penicillin shot hurt like heck because they get it in the butt.  Some recruits do have reactions from their shots so good for him for calling you and being responsible!!!

Hello JMom,

Deep breath. :)

He is probably fine, not sick or injured. It's just that there was that unclear note from the pediatrician. (I wonder why the doctor included that?) Obviously antibiotics from the penicillin family are common, so that needed to be clarified.

they ALL get a "peanut butter" shot, and it's penicillin. So that's why he's asking!!!! Try not to worry, they will take god care of him!!!!!! :)

The SR's will get a slew of shots while they are there.  One is called the "peanut butter" shot.  My SR told me about it.  It is a penicillin shot and very thick.  I think this is what was happening.  They probably wanted to make sure that he was not allergic.  This whole BC thing is crazy.  You will get more accustomed to it though.

I'm no expert here, but I wouldn't be concerned yet (I know easier said then done).  It could just be them going through the records and checking everything.  If he only shipped on on the 18th he's probably still just getting settled.  They need to check the records and make sure everything matches, so if the Pediatricians note was unclear they just needed to verify.  When my son was in BC I got some random calls like that.  They were always very short, he just asked what he needed to know and then that was the end of the call.  I can't believe i can say this....I never thought I would get through my "baby" leaving back in Dec....but trust me HE WILL BE OK!!  Don't worry, they are going to take could care of your boy.

Good luck on your journey!! - stay strong!

It's the "peanutbutter shot" that he is calling about.  They get an injection of penicillin withing a week of arrival.  It is thick and painful and injection site is buttock.  He is most likely just FINE and just wanted to be sure they could give him the shot.  Don't worry!

Thank you everyone!!!!! Hope the shot settles with him fine!

Just wanted to clarify - the shot is not a penicillin, is it gamma globulin serum and is given to boost their immune systems.  The confusion is because people who have allergies to penicillin should not receive the shot.  In boot camp they receive a course of a antibiotic, probably Cipro, instead.

Thanks for clarifying that. Many people think that the gamma globulin shot (AKA Peanut Butter Shot) is pennicillin, but as you pointed out, it is not.

My son IS ALLERGIC to Amoxicillan so what does this mean for him? He ships out for BC on July 8th. I know it took him a few weeks to be cleared by the medical board when he originally did his paperwork.

Be sure he knows to indicate a penicillin allergy when asked and he will not be given gamma globulin, but will receive an alternative treatment.
