Hi All :)

I'm sure there is a discussion about this somewhere but I can't seem to find it!

I'm just looking for any tips and information about the train that I hear about that goes from near base to Chicago. I will have a rental car but it just seems like everyone advises to take the train rather than drive to Chicago...

I've honestly never been on a train before so I have no idea how it works and I'm very unfamiliar with buses and taxis. I'm from LA where public transportation is not big at all...

Here are some of the questions off the top of my head but any other things that you share that you think is good to know is all very much appreciated! :)

How long is the train ride?
How often does the train run?
Anyone know a link/website for the train?
Once you get off the train, is everything within walking distance or will we have to catch cabs or busses to go from place to place?
Any cool tips on places to check out? My SR and I love to eat (we're big foodies), love to shop, and LOVE exploring new places and seeing the sights. We definitely want to go check out millennium park and get deep dish pizza.

THANK YOU THANK YOU in advance!!! :) :)

Google metra Chicago and this will direct you to their public transport train. I believe the one that goes to Great Lakes from Chicago is at the Ogilvie Station. You can get a weekend pass unlimited for $7. But most SRs will ship out on the Saturday after PIR unless they are going to A school at GL.

thank you! yes, i'm one of the lucky ones - my SR is staying in GL for A school :)

A good place to eat in Chicago for deep dish pizza was Gino's East on N. Wells St.

I know some people on here for PIR weekend did take the train and found it very relaxing and the Sailor got to spend time visiting with his family. One good thing about taking the train into Chicago is you don't have to pay for parking in Chicago. Parking in Chicago can be expensive. We drove into Chicago and it was a pretty penny. I do know the train makes many stops between GL and Chicago and you will have to watch your time as for the return trip because you don't want your sailor to get in trouble for being late. Could possibly get his liberty taken away. You can also hit a lot of traffic driving to and from the city so if you drive you would have to allow for delays either way.

My son is now serving on a ship but returned to GL last Sunday for advanced training. He is enjoying his stay in GL for the extra rest and sleep he is getting. :)

The museum of science and industry was interesting and the navy pier was pretty cool too. People on the pier will walk up to your sailor and thank them for serving. :)

As you mention in your post below your son will be staying in GL for A school so he will get Friday, Sat. & Sunday liberty unless he has duty. Good luck to you and your SR. :)

trriciaaa, The train is the best way to go in my opinion and like Sherry said, buy the weekend pass even if you are not sure you will be going back to the city again. Tickets are three dollars each way and it is seven dollars for an unlimited weekend pass.

The train is a commuter train so lots of stops, but it is a great time to visit, or in your sailors case, sleep. LOL It does take a little over an hour to get there and come back, so check the train schedule as soon as you get off the train. Allow yourselves plenty of time on the return trip.
