Hi all,
My son is heading for Pensacola after graduation (as far as I know) What will he be allowed to take with him? What will he need in addition to what he currently has at boot camp? Thank you!

Leesa, to some extent each A school is a little different. Primarily, it depends on how long they are going to be there. It is usually suggested to bring their favorite small sized electronics, favorite running shoes for PT and underwear. My son only took one extra pair of comfy clothes when we meet him at the airport (we had actually packed a small black drawstring bag with those items, and his phone and Kindle at the motel the night before, so that he could put in it what he thought would fit in his backpack.)  Anything else can be mailed. It depends on their housing arrangements and how much storage space they have as well as how quickly they might be moving to the fleet and either be living in barracks or moving onto the ship and not have any storage space. - Also, they should supply bedding and I think he will have towels from BC. He will need to get toiletries but some of that is restricted in carry on or luggage and it is easiest for them to pick up at the NEX at their base.

Mailing items via the US Postal Services, what fits ships priority boxes is how I send most stuff. It includes tracking and some insurance as well.

Thank you for all the helpful info
I appreciate it very much!

Leesa-- Don't plan to take much to PIR.  You can mail stuff to your Sailor as they let you know what they need or want.

Thank you so much! I was thinking small laptop so that is why I was asking. Maybe I’ll bring it to graduation along with one change of clothes and he can either take or not.

Leesa, I am not sure what it says in the information Phoenixmom gave you about laptops, but if it is his personal one, he may want it. I would recommend having it where he can put it inside the backpack they are issued. It will have to be pulled out separately from everything, so he needs to be able to carry it along with his other sea bags and such. But personally, I would rather fly with my laptop than have it mailed.

Hi Leesa here is some info in regards to mailing out packages and liberty phases.

Now the Phases may be different in every A school but I'm sure your Loved One will let you know.

Leesa, laptops are fine. He will likely want it with him as opposed to mailed. Cell phones ereaders, tablets..... those are all allowed however they are also prone to theft so make sure he has coverage for them. USAA has a good policy available. I would limit clothing to maybe 1 outfit and favorite underwear and sneakers. Our sailor brought an empty sea bag when he came home so he could take his favorite clothes back..... most no longer fit him! They are growing and changing body shape and may find that what once worked now doesn't. There isn't much room for knickknacks, books, or other such items. We try to have everything do double duty.... blanket that speaks to his fandom, computer that doubles as gaming system and music player. That kind of stuff.
Thanks so much!
