Betty,

my son was deployed to Afghanistan about two months ago and I totally agree it is so nice to read what these ladies have to say. I just love the funny stories.

I went to sleep last night with the wind howling, a true Texas blue norther...dropped 10 degrees in about 5 minutes, the dog was very confused. From 62 to 52 in one trip out...and mom staying "hurry up...go pee!"

ruthella, I think we should start a discussion with all those ranks/qualifications and how they fall in a time line so it's there. Not to mention the real words for all those darn initials! FMF is not guaranteed, you have to earn it. I know my son spoke of one guy that left the Navy because he didn't qualify as FMF and didn't want to go bluesside, wanted to stay with the Marines if he was going to re enlist.

Gloria, I keep telling myself that when he starts that job full on, he'll find challenge and things he likes about it. I think the last class started Dec 3 but he was on "settling in" leave, the 10 days they get to find an apartment, etc. It's a 9 day course, he'll be an instructor. Five days are out in the field, in the Hill country, altho they do not do the course in the summer, which is alot closer to real field conditions in Iraq/Afghanistan. And it's 'medical personnel" they train, not necessarily just corpsmen or even corpsmen at all right now. It's a joint Army/Navy program from what I could read on the web site.

He got a big check from the Navy last week deposited in his account, double what he was expecting for making the move. He put it in savings, said " the Navy doesn't have you just pay it back if they screwed up, they just stop paying you until they have their money!" He called the pay master yesterday and they said it was all his, he could spend it. I think we're TV shopping after Christmas! I hope whoever told him that wasn't an idiot. ( can you tell I grew up in the Navy world?)

I need to return this beautiful scarf I picked up for my daughter, it's got a split right down the center, it's crochet, so I didn't notice it in the store, very soft, silky, a little sparkle...and I should do it today but I really don't want to go out! I work this evening for a couple of hours and tomorrow from 10-2, and then Christmas is here!!

Ya'll take care of yourselves!! Merry Christmas!!

We're right in between two huge storms...one way or another we're getting rain...tornadoes in East Texas I heard.

My son is home. and the damn deployment word came up again. He's talking to the chief who handles deployments. He just doesn't want to be assigned to the Army, if he goes to Afghanistan he wants to be with a Marine unit. Geez, he hasn't really even started this instructor job yet! I hope it's not "boring".

I also had him explain to my old brain how FMTB and FMF works. FMTB is training, which I knew and FMF is a qualification. You can be a field corpsman without earning FMF credentials. I'm sure all of you knew that, but the terms were seeming like they were being used interchangeably and it was confusing.

Christmas decor looks so much more natural in snow. Thanks for sharing, Carol.

Active day on the board! those of you with so much free time, please come WRAP these gifts! and Kristine! an early gift for you! he must be gaining confidence in himself and his job, his buddies, doesn't seem quite so strange, it's becoming habit and more routine. Carol, I'm not going to say anything nice to you, it'll bring the tears, but you know...our hearts are with you this season.

I can still hear my little girl's voice (now she's 39!) as she snitched on Noah, our little neighbor..."noah's peein' off the porch again"...then go back to what she was doing. But no downstairs neighbors!! what a hoot!

Back to it...just burnt the last batch of peanut butter cookies, it's time to stop that and just wrap...and figure out how to make the door to this office disappear so no one wanders into it on Christmas day...
