unicorn, welcome! we also have a group for moms with kids in Iraq/Afghanistan here on N4M's. Please join us if you feel the urge! If this group of women on this board doesn't know the answers, we'll either make one up or find someone who will...not really. These are good people. My son is in his fifth year in the Navy, greenside (Marine) Corpsman for the first four hears, now stationed in San Antonio at the new corpsman training center. San Antonio is only 70 miles from my front door, so yes, unicorn, dreams do come true!

I have to clean today! My daughter's MIL is coming for Christmas Supper. Geez, how did that happen?

Unicorn40270- Congrats on finding this site !!! I am new to the site too and everyone is very kind and helpful.
My son is in Afg as well. He is a Doc for the Marines and I feel your fear, this is my second child to be in the Navy but the first one to be in combat. Whats nice about this site is that we have each other and everyone understands our fear.

God Bless,

Marsha aks Mike's Mom

I know there are alot of 19 year olds on CL, I just keep thinking of one particular one my son was very worried about that was participating in the program my son was working in right before he came to Texas last month. It was very different to hear my 24 year old son speak of someone being "so young" and how he tried to convince him the military would help him and he was "young enough to get his life back on track and do well." I think I will not share this Marine's name with him. The young Marine just buried in Sinton wasn't much older, on his way to his second deployment. Those poor families, they are reeling this year. Blessings and good thoughts to all those in that pain this year, actually any time.

Good morning all and a happy winter solstice to you! Yeah, yeah, I know, I have no clue about winter! Hope all in the northeast are safe and warm! That storm was a doozy! We did have a freeze watch last night and another tonight, so we are feeling the chill a bit! Haven't gotten to read all the post from the weekend yet, I forgot my power cord here at the office over the weekend - duh! I did get a call from my cub, good news - he loves it in Naples! Makes it a little easier on me to know he's not homesick at the holidays. Was good to hear the happiness in his voice! Will get to reading backwards here soon and catch up with you all later on tonight!

Cindy, what a roller coaster for you this holiday. My deepest condolences on losing such a young woman you loved, and who you had such hopes and dreams for in her life. But I share your middle of the night jubliance on that phone call, maybe you better keep that coffee pot plugged in 24/7 especially during the holidays!!! Lovely Christmas gathering!

Canned vegies. My mother thought they were manna from Heaven...no canning of vegies, no growing the green beans, no cleaning the barn. My grandfather died when she was young, and there were 4 girls, one boy...and my mom became the other farm hand. She gardened as I grew up, but no vegies! finally, when my daughter was a baby, I put in garden at her house in Corpus Christi, longest growing season of the world! and found out how much she knew! all organic gardening, because they had no chemicals back then! she taught me so much, and loved having the vegies fresh from outside her door. But no canning.
