We called his 1st encounter with a snow shovel "character-building"! Though I've lived on the east coast (NY, DC, and Boston), my son's only lived in San Francisco, HI & AZ. I took a full length fur & matching hat & still froze. I'm so spoiled here!

Interesting is one word - freaking freezing cold blizzard is another that comes to mind! LOL! Mind you, I'm a FL girl! With the exception of 10 days off at the holidays my poor son spent his entire winter there, I don't know how he survived, he'd never even seen snow until he was in bootcamp!

Dana's ship is based in Norfolk, so he's happy he can be keep his condo, friends etc for the next three yrs. PIR on Christmas Eve must have been interesting. I was in GL in February for corps school graduation, great experience but bitter cold.

Devin PIR'd last December 24th so he's just been in over a year now. He'll be in Italy for 3 years, we're planning a trip over there probably late summer or early fall. He's been assigned to an optical surgeon there.

If he's a surg tech then Dana must know him. Not easy on you I'm sure, but Naples is a great assignment for him. Portsmouth is a great place but I'd love to have a reason to go to Italy! How long has your son been in the Navy?

Welcome Marcy! My son has been in Portsmouth since May, he said everyone there is really nice, he's a surg tech and is headed to Naples, Italy tomorrow!

We were laughing in the car on the way to the airport, I remember when I moved out of the house at 18 yrs old, my mother was ecstatic, she celebrated when each of us moved on! And mind you, I was a good kid, went to school paid rent at home, had a curfew and everything, she was just done with the whole kids at home thing I guess. Me, I hate the kids being gone. Of course we weren't allowed to have pets either (I snuck in a goldfish once, it lived in a jelly jar in my room for 4 years) and now I have a mini-petting zoo at home! So I'm not sure where I get it from. My mom would do anything in the world for me, she's just warm and fuzzy, you know?

Hi all, just joined your group and from reading feel like I'm getting to know you a little bit already! My son Dana has been a corpsman for two years (anesthesia tech at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth), and is heading to FMTP at Camp Lejeune in March.

Devin just called, he got everything handled this morning that needed to be done and now is just hanging out at his buddies, his flight for Naples doesn't leave until tomorrow night. Darned - if I knew that I would have kept him home another day! Of course then I'd just been prolonging the sobbing. Mind y'all I kept it together pretty good at the airport, I waited to lose it until he was on his plane and couldn't see his momma crying like a baby.

Monica - FMTB is training to be attached to a Marine unit. As the Marines are actually a division of the Navy, our Corpsmen are their medics as well. They have this training at Fort Pendleton and Fort LeJuene. Your son has a while yet before he has to make the decision of what he wants to do. Don't know where y'all are from but bundle up for that trip to GL! My gosh I don't think I've ever been so cold in all my lift as I was up there! :0)
