My sailor is a Corpsman at Balboa.  She has just gotten to her post and is housed in a billet that is some 18 miles away from the hospital.  She told us that the Navy told her to find her own ride back and forth from the hospital. Is there any way to get around this?  Navy will not pay for her to take a taxi and has basically said "too bad", yet they expect her to be at work on time.

Also, we are considering shipping her car to her in order to solve this problem.  Does anyone know anything about shipping a car and what requirements there are?

She may well be better off having you sell her car so she can buy one in California, versus paying for shipping.  Corpsmen need cars, no matter where they are stationed.

Marcy's idea is probably the best unless it is a wonderful car that your sailor does not want to give up.  But, no matter what, be sure your sailor is aware that there are lots of car dealers just waiting to rip off young military people with no bargain prices and ridiculous interest rates.

Where the heck is she billeted that she is 18 miles from Balboa?

Has she checked to see if there is a duty bus or shuttle?  Has she asked around her billets if anyone else works at Balboa?

There are buses and streetcars.  Of course, that can be a pain but it is reality.  When my sailor was in middle school, we lived in Germany.  Each day, he walked a mile to the train station, took the train to town, transferred to u-bahn, then to a bus, and finally walked a few blocks to school.  I think it is possible for your sailor to do the same.

That said, some areas, including right outside the base where my son lived while in C school at Balboa are dangerous and I would not want my son or a daughter walking around anytime except daylight alone.

My son's first duty station after A school was right back at home so getting his car back was not a problem.  His ex-wife (they didn't know each other then), stopped by her home and picked up her car and drove it to her duty station.  Several years later, they both drove from Virginia to San Diego to attend their C schools.

Could she take a quick leave to come home and pick up her car?

I have no experience with shipping cars except from overseas back to the States and vise versa and that was always at government expense. Google is your friend, though.

Good luck on resolving this problem.

We are going to ship the car, but don't know if there are any requirements that need to be met. For instance, is there a specific place where these vehicles can be unloaded?  Is there a special time frame that they accept vehicles?  How does she get it on base?  Can the car be delivered at the hospital?  My daughter is very slow in getting the information and frankly, I just want to be done with this.  It's becoming a real chore!!

You have to call the transport company to get information about where the car will be unloaded.

As to getting it on base, she drives to base gate and shows them her ID. She may have to get a temporary pass or they may just pass her through the gate.  Things have changed with terrorism threat level.  I don't remember having to show an ID to get on the Balboa campus but they might have one now.

She will have to register her vehicle on base but I don't know where that office is.  She will need her ID, insurance paperwork, and registration.  She should find out if they set up appointments.  If not, be sure she shows up in uniform because they usually get front of line privileges.

Not positive, but I think Navy bases have discontinued issuing decals for the cars.  I know NAS Pensacola no longer does but we do have to show our ID at the gate and tell them where we are going.

How old is your daughter?  My son was procrastinator extraordinaire until he had a wife to make him do tasks like this.  I hated asking questions because it felt like I had to drag a response out of him.  He still thinks I am a nag.

If you do go the car purchase route, check with Fleet and Family Support for a car buying workshop - Naval Station Norfolk has one.  http://navyformoms.com/group/norfolksailorsfamilyfriends/forum/topi...

FFS may also be able to help you and or your daughter get the info she needs for shipping as well.
