Our Grand-Daughter's PIR 02/05/2016, Ship 02 DIV 914

Congrats on the recruit. Are you planning on seeing the PIR? Did you know that if you can't attend, it is usually streamed on the internet live? Every Friday you can see the PIR... it helps to know what is happening and why.
My son called just this evening. He is moving to night shift (7PM-7AM) cooking "mid-rats" for those who work on the ship all night. After 7 months of retrofit and maintenance, they will begin short jaunts of 2-3 days in Feb. some time in preparation for their next deployment (2017). He is glad to be back in the kitchen after 4 months of scrub, painting, etc.
I hope your granddaughter is as happy with her choice as my son is. If you have questions, you can simply ask it in the general discussion (back to CS Moms Discussions at the bottom) There are a lot of women who will get an email, and possibly one of the moms of a daughter can answer more specific questions you might have.
Take care and know that the Navy does care for it's recruits!
Thanks, I'm partially packed and ready to go!!! Glad to know you heard from your son and to know he's enjoy'n the journey. I spoke with her(D) last Sunday. Everything seem to be going well. Just testing and getting ready for finals (Battle Station) I'm gonna try general discussion, again for a response. Hopefully a mom of a Daughter will come forth. Again thanks and it's been a pleasure! Take Care
congrats Nana my son has been in for 2 years now and I remember the anticipation of when we would get the I'm a sailor call. PIR was an amazing time. You will love it. My son is cooking at the Naval hospital in Camp Pendleton and loves it.
Thanks and Thank you for responding, I'm happy to hear He's living his dream. I am enjoy'n this journey right alone with our Grand-Daughter. It seems like life is what we make!
I am a CS mom and a very worried one. My son just signed and wont leave till the end of May. I'm not sure if it's the best choice for him. I know it's a demanding field. I'm scared for him. Anyone have any advice?
Lizzyanne - most of the demand is in hours (often 12 hour shifts). My son is NOT an academic, so CS was one of the easier rates he could do, but he has truely enjoyed the work, even when he was moved out of the galleys and to a more general "supply" role for several months [ clean, scrape, paint etc.]. When the carrier is underway EVERYONE is working 12 hour shifts, so it's sort of normal. Mostly CS are tired and often they have to work the holidays to prepare for the big meals, but at least they ALWAYS get to eat [during deployments, there are rates that simply never seem to have the time to get TO the mess]!
It's also true, that the head chef at the White House is ALWAYS a Navy CS (Also a lot of the pentagon cooks) so there is definitely a goal to aim for if that is their wish! The Navy will teach them everything they need to know in Richmond, VA over about 5 weeks of class. My son says that was the best time so far (almost 2 years).
Hope everything goes well for your sailor. It's a bumpy, but good "ride" according to my son.
Thank you for responding. You've given me some insight of whats ahead. You are appreciated!
Good morning! Can anyone tell me if this is a very active site? I am on the CS FB page, however, it seems like the majority of people are CS's and not family members. My gal is in A School right now. Her PIR was 3/3/17
Hi, kwmw228. Most of the discussions are on the front page of this discussion. Welcome. Glad your here!
I was looking for active site too, my son's PIR was 3/10 and is currently in A school.
Most of us check in on the main page for any new discussions or questions... I have my preferences set to email me anything that pops here, but more moms just check the front page discussion. Welcome - hope your son enjoys the rate. Mine is on his second deployment on a carrier and really likes the ports he's seen!
