My son said there's nowhere safe to store them.  He has a really expensive bike ($3,000!!) and he said he'd never take it out there.  But maybe with a cheaper bike it wouldn't be so bad.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the kids can take a bike with them to "A" school?

Yes, fortunately my son is thriving there and doing great. Both his grandfathers were CTI's in the Navy!!  My dad and my husband's dad. My dad told him going in that it's not for everyone. Even smart people don't make it and if he were to fail the class it doesn't mean he isn't smart.  He said some people might even have to choose a different language more appropriate for their brain. Or, they could do something else similar to CTI. We live right by NSA (that's where he works)  and he was telling me yesterday that if they fail their test (anual? i don't know how often) they are re-assigned to a similar type of job. He said even after being a CTI for a few years they can still fail their repeat test years down the road.

It's funny you mention how your son can't talk about his job (to Debbie's husband)....my dad NEVER EVER talked about his job. All my life I never knew what he did. I found out when I was 38. I still don't know! But I know he was a CTI. Both my dad and my husband's dad worked at the National Security Agency after years of travelinig. All we knew was that they were in the Navy!! hahaha. I have SO MUCH respect for these guys!!!!

Florida girl- yes this is the same person who was "rolled back" to the beginning of the program again. But this time he passed the class. Apparently you can pass the class but then still be able to fail the test afterwords ( much like taking any board exam I imagine). It's really sad bc this young man met a girl in his language, got engaged & they were to get married when the got to Georgia. Now she's there alone & the Navy hasn't decided what to do with him yet. Who knew!

just talked with RC about this test.  He is aware of it.  He doesn't know what is on the test - he knows that it is important and that you have to pass it and that you only get one chance in taking it.  If you don't pass it, then he said that the Navy finds you another job.  RC's friend who is an army SF soldier said that everyone in all the services have to take a "final" after the class to make sure that they learned what they need to do their job.  It is scary.  So much is riding on it.

KC mom was that the boy you were talking about that got set back 7 months because of school work too or is this another boy... either way that is not good! you will deff have to keep us up to date on that bc like you i did not know they had a final test and if that they only get one shot!

OMG I've never heard of this! That's just scary.

So, I just heard some sad news tonight about my son's roomate who recently graduated. Apparently, he failed "the test". So, there is a test after graduation that they must pass to be a CTI that they only get one chance to take? He is not allowed to take it again and now the Navy is deciding what to do with him. Seems so strange. After I graduated college in the nursing program, I had to take my "boards". If someone fails, they are allowed to take it again.  I thought it was strange that these people only get one try on "the test"??? Anyone else heard anything about that?

If you could let me know what "frocking" is - is it a term for advancement - and what is the process?

Comment by florida_girl ship 3/div 235 on March 1, 2012 at 11:54pm
Debbie, I have heard about the frocking ceremonies, but do not quite understand the whole process. What rate did your son enter DLI as? Just want to be a constant encouragement for my sailor so he knows he can work on both studying for school and any advancements.
