Thank you Reid's Ma!!  I have read about 17 mile drive and Alioto's.. Just to spend unhurried time together will be wonderful!

Cannery row; drive on to lover's point; pick up 17 mi. drive to Carmel and Pebble Beach (if you like to golf, a must see) eat breakfast at Allioto's in Pacific Grove. If you can take a longer drive out of town go PCH to Big Sur (Nepenthe for lunch) but only on a very clear day! Have a great time!

We Skyped with our daughter yesterday and were happy to see her mood improved! Whew! It was a bad week for her. We really can't understand how difficult it is. We just keep trying to motivate and support them and pray they succeed! We are so excited to go to Monterey to see her in about 3 weeks! We are staying at the Army Lodge and plan on doing some sightseeing, Any recommendations?

Hi KC'mom. Yeah my son J. went through DLI with your son and they did witness a lot. One formation that stuck out was a Captain's Mast where they publicly punish the sailor's for breaking rules. Several were for drunken episodes and other rule breaks. These actions scared my kid straight and he for once walked the straight and narrow. But all that bad stuff aside it was all about camaraderie and cohesion and leaning on each other. J's group was great and worked hard and i'm not sure if they had anyone not finish. He is now in Gordon doing just wonderful and loving Navy life. I just couldn't be happier and prouder. But don't get me wrong he is not perfect and in one incident fell flat on his face and lost his two front teeth! But low and behold another good came out of this. The great medical and dental plan. He had his teeth replaced and has the million dollar smile back, hahahaha.

KC'smom My biggest fear is stress! But I'm hoping that once she realizes that she can do this, she will relax a little. And it will help to see us in a few weeks. Thanks again to all who have offered insight. I really appreciate it. (and I don't feel so alone in this)

I've mentioned this before, but my son had 2 best friends the whole way through DLI. I met them, I met their parents,  and my son did everything with these guys. They were roommates, too.  One is doing great and is at Ft. Gordon with my son.  The second struggled a bit through DLI but made it all the way through graduation.  The stress I guess got to him and he made some poor choices. The navy let him know that they would be discharging him and he stayed behind at DLI while the others headed off to their next base.  He attempted suicide. My son's wife was still at DLI when it happened.  My son felt horrible and didn't see it coming. Luckily he lived.  But, just an example of what stress does not people.

Thank you momkaw and Laurie. I am praying that "this to shall pass"! I tell her to look at the big picture and remember the reasons why she joined. I also found out that her one good friend is not doing well and may not be able to continue with the program. I feel that this is Navy life and people will come and go just as she will.

Huskymom: how exciting!! Once out of boot camp you can, Skype, text, Facebook. I love Facebook as I have been in shameless contact with a girl in his class to help me get my son to check out what he needed for his AA degree!

Boot camp will be the longest 9 weeks of your life, but everyone survives. Make sure that you get attached to his PIR date N4M's page. Lots of support, but it doesn't get up and running until a week or so into boot camp. Also make sure you read through the leaving for boot camp page. I knew more than my son about boot camp because of that page.

DONT FORGET THE RULE OF THUMB:

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!!!!!
Good luck to you and your daughter

Brismom: I would encourage her to talk to someone who is a month or so ahead of her. My son has never been at the top of his class but has been consistent and has improved and maintained. Reminding her that not everyone has to be at the top.

I think the other thing that gave my son great confidence was when a retired graduate of DLI came and spoke. 3 of his children also attended DLI. Only one of them graduated. He reassured the students that going to the fleet can still offer them a long and successful career in the Navy. That speech occurred at his 6th month in and offered great comfort and reassurance.

He is now 1 month from graduation in a dual language. She will make it!! And so will you!!

I'd like to introduce myself, I'm Jeanine, my daughter is a DEPPER, leaving on 7/28, and then on to DLI. I've been wondering if any of you skype with your sailors? We'd like to stay in touch, A school is such a long time, and even though we plan to text, I'd like face-time too. I know their schedule is tight with studies, PT, etc but I'm hoping there will be time occasionally.
