The CTI's have to take the DLAB. It's a test that you have to request to take, since I believe it is linked only to that rate. It's not a hard test, but they only give it to people interested in CTI since it tests one's capacity to learn different categories of languages From Spanish to Mandarin. My wife was assigned Arabic, so we'll be stationed in Augusta after A-School in Monterey.

Did the navy move you to FL to be with your husband while he's in CTN school?
Comment by KLSchisler on March 17, 2015 at 1:25am
Wow thanks everyone for all the wonderful feedback! I don't think my husband will qualify with CTI since I guess he didn't pass that test? Not sure. He is interested in CTN but his friend is in the school now and said he never got a reenlistment bonus for zone A is that true? CTNs don't get a zone A reenlistment bonus?

My husband is here in Pensacola now waiting for CTN school to start. He said a lot of people say it's hard but worth it. We are getting BAH (housing allowing) and I live in an apartment off base but I'm not allowed to live on base. My uncle was also a CTN and was stationed in both Hawaii and Japan for a while. He had a great career and got a six figure job after his 26 year career in the Navy as a CTN.

My wife is CTI and the CTI that briefed her said she has spent a mere 22 weeks at sea in her 16 year career. If he can test into CTI, there are volumes of opportunity outside of the military being fluent in multiple languages. Oh, and last I checked, reenlistment was $75k and advancement is pretty good as it is in any CT field.

My son is CTM and on his 2nd duty station San Diego. His first one was Japan but he choose Japan since he finished 1st in his class and got to choose. He was DIRSUP which counted as sea duty but wasn't at sea all the time. He was assigned to a ship for the first 1 1/2 yr and went out when they did. Usually a month or 2 at a time. But spent most of the time he worked in a shop. CTM don't have to live on the ship they just go out when the ship goes out. Otherwise working in a shop is all I know. As they can't tell you everything they do. Mine did have a 6 moth deployement but don't know where he went just know he was out at sea. I know he loves his job most of the time.

Comment by Bookster on March 16, 2015 at 9:03pm
I would love the answer to that as my son is CTM and I have no idea what length to expect the deployments to be.
Comment by KLSchisler on March 16, 2015 at 7:27pm

Hi there, my husband is wanting to cross rate to the Cryptology world but unsure which exact rate. Hes favoring CTMs right now. My questions are #1 Would the family be able to move with him? I know you go to school in Florida but not sure if hes able to take us with him.  #2 What are the deployments like? We are on a submarine (boomer) so hes only deployed for a few months at time. I have no idea what the deployment schedules are like for a surface ship, even more so as a CTM, or CTR, CTN, etc. #3. What rate would you recommend? We were looking into CTN but heard its difficult and theres no reenlistment bonus for zone A but you hardly get deployed and live in Japan, Hawaii, etc which would be nice is that true? Any helpful tips or advice would be much appreciated!

He needs to double check. Most will say a BS, however it will say xx in lieu of a degree. Have him check RayJobs.com. They just had a big hiring effort. In the meantime, I'm betting he didn't complete his 5 year update prior to getting out. He needs to take a part time job, even as a janitor, to keep that access active. With most companies he wouldn't be in it for long since he then can apply for internal reqs. He also might want to consider active reserves. It's a great gap filler while looking for a job...
Comment by idahojeep on March 7, 2015 at 1:23am

Craig thanks for that link.  One of my twin CTRs is out as of last Sept. and it appears that many of those jobs require BS or Masters.  Pretty hard to have gotten that and still have an active TS/SCI clearance if you only were in 4 years.  Any other thoughts?

I do have a friend who just left L-3 Communications after 12 years and my son is meeting an HR rep from that company.
