Thanks for your comments n support. My Sailor's roommates are all assigned to the Gettysburg n I am sure they are feeling a mixture of relief and confusion! We will head to Mayport soon to bid farewell to the Hue City. Her last deployment was actually 3 months shorter than predicted, so who knows what this year will bring?

Thank you DO Diva...I will be certain to pass this encouragement on to him.  Right now he is trying to get acclimated to the newness of things and he seemed a bit discouraged when I talked with him the other night.  If he knows a little of what to expect, it will be much easier ( a lot like his ma in this sense :)

Slapout and Rita, I feel for both of you.  I wonder how the sequestration are going to effect our sailors.  I know mine is hearing all kinds of scuttlebutt.  My son's long deployment was extended last time because of the Tsunami recovery.   It is always harder for those that wait.  Hang in there.

Our Sailor is just starting his A school in GL.  What things should I know to best encourage him?  He is learning the ropes himself and I know how badly he wants to be successful...I would love to know a little bit about the process he is learning as well so we can support him.

My DC3 has 2 more weeks til another deployment. They originally thought it would last thru midsummer but now it appears it may be well into fall before they get back. Well, maybe he will get promoted before he returns and finish his ESWS pin. There has to be a bright side to this.

Congrats Kat on the new addition to the family. My Sailor comes home next week n will be stateside for 2 months before redeploying. We only have a 6 hour drive so we can meet the ship. I have a 21 yr old at Ft Campbell KY who will be on leave so we all 3 get to meet the ship! Now the bad news--my Sailor leaves about the same time my Soldier n his co. deploy for the Sandbox. Don't know when we will be together again after that :(

Calirose - I feel your pain.  My son's orders were for San Diego and we lived in Northern Virginia.   We moved back to California (Bay Area) for a 2 temporary assignment because our youngest wanted to be able to see his brother more.  We still rarely see him, maybe once a quarter.  Virginia is an amazing place to visit.  There is nothing like it.  Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to see Williamsburg, Jamestowne and even D.C. together!  Hang in there!

My son just got his orders for Norfolk Virginia after he completes A school. All the way on other side of country from is. Kinda sad but excited for him

slapout is correct.  My son just earned is DC3.  He has been in a little over two years.  He immediately  deployed out of A school and spent the first two months doing relief efforts off  Sendai, Japan,  followed by six more months at sea.   We are really proud of him.  He has earned two NAMs.  Unfortunately, he won't be able to come home this Christmas because his wife will be three weeks out from her due date.  A new grandbaby in January.  That will be a celebration!

They usually have a minimum of time they have to spend in one rating but tests for advancement are given fall & spring. You can pass the test & still not advance if there are already too many Sailors with your rate & rating. There are other considerations too. They consider leadership, ESWS pin, deployment. My Sailor was E-3 for a year & a half n tested 3 times before he got DC3. Hope this helps.
