My daughter is a DC as well.  She has been in Japan for 3 years.  They are n the process of a hull swap and then she will be back in the USA.  She has been assigned to the USS George HW Bush our of Norfolk.

Navywife12 - there are still those phases for their liberty weekends, but it won't happen after PIR.  They will go to A school directly.  We saw Katie on the weekend and then she had to report Sunday evening.

During BC - write letters, send pics, have your son draw for him.  During A school he can have his phone and computer, so communication will be much greater.

Thank you everyone for everything. What was A school like? Do they do the phases in DC A school? Because I wanted to stay in Chicago for a little while longer then just the weekend.

Wow.  Two boys in the service.  That is awesome.  Your so lucky to have one close.  My son is in Virginia and we are in California.  We were planning a trip in May but my oldest son's wife passed away quite unexpectedly in January and he and my kids have moved back home.  So for the time being, I am taking care of the grandkids and still trying to get our feet back on the ground.  We hope to go in September.  My son's ship doesn't deploy till 2013.  I would love to experience seeing them coming home rather than leaving.

Lori it is so nice to see your handsome Sailor's face!  Congratulate him on the training op & also for the promotion.  (I am sure you already have!)  Since my Sailor's PIR he has been at Mayport & that makes us happy because we're within driving distance.  We will be going to see his ship off at deployment :(.  Also my #2 son, my Sailor's little bro, is now in the Army & is at Ft. Benning training in infantry & will be going airborne.  Hooyah!  Hooah!  It gets complicated being a military mom sometimes.

Hi Slapout.  Its been quite a while since I have posted here.  My sailor just had his one year anniversary also. He was just promoted two weeks ago to Petty Officer 3rd Class.  He was asked if he was interested in being a SAR swimmer for the ship.  Of course he said yes so he will be testing soon and if he passes then off to Florida for school.  We are so incredibly proud of him.  It has been amazing so far being part of the Navy family!!  We have NAVY in big red duct tape letters on our garage.  We did it for him when he came home from boot camp and school the first time and just left it up.  We get lots of comments on it.  We only had red duct tape so that is why it isn't in blue!  Go Navy!!!

Hi Julie--It is great to have a DC in the family!  When people ask you what your Sailor does, just tell them he keeps the ship afloat!  The reply about PIR is exactly what I remember.  The only thing I might add is that if you can stay at the Navy Lodge, it is a great idea.  It's adjacent to base, reasonably priced, and the staff is so nice & helpful.  I do not know about the shuttle because we had a car.  But everything is right within the four-five mile radius of the base, and you can definitely attend the meet & greet which I think may be at the Ramada (?).  Thank your Sailor for all of us.  Mine has just had his one-year anniversary with the USN & he's about to be deployed.

Hi Julie-our son graduated last Friday (the 6th) so I can help some on what you will be going through.  First of all, join the group Basic Training for Moms.  You will be able to find others going through the same steps with you.  Also, once your husband has a PIR date you will be able to find others with PIR on the same day.  PIR is Pass in Reveiw (aka graduation).  The first thing I want to warn you about is the lack of communication.  We received four letters and four phone calls in the 8 weeks.  The first two weeks are the hardest.  Your husband's "box" will be the first thing you receive.  It will have his clothes, cell phone, shoes etc. that he took with him.  Sometimes they write a note in the box but my son did not.  Then about a week later you will receive the form letter. This will tell you his mailing address, PIR date and parking pass password.  Don't lose this form letter - it has a lot of information that you will need.  He will want lots of mail so start writing before you get his address and then mail like crazy after.  Do not send your son's original drawings - only copies.  I have heard that they have to tear them up (sounds heartbreaking).  At PIR you will get to spend time with your husband.  My son is Damage Control as well so he gets to stay in Great Lakes for A school.  This was nice since we were able to spend most of the weekend with him.  Keep in mind that they have been told what, how and when to do everything the last 8 weeks so they are a little disorientated.  It is best not to plan a lot of sight seeing trips or adventures.  We found our son wanted to nap in our hotel room!  Also, after PIR they can get their cell phones back and can have laptops.  I was able to "Face Time" with my son last night and it was so great.  It about killed me not to be able to talk to him or see him for 8 weeks.  The hotels in the area have shuttles to PIR which makes it easier getting in and out of the base.  There are toll roads to and from Chicago so bring lots of change (on way back to airport - you need exact change of $1.50).  My best advice is to check this site and ask questions.  There are some Veteran Moms on here that know just about everything!  I learned so much on this site.  My son even asked me how I knew so much about Boot Camp - he said it was like I went through it with him (LOL).  Also, sometimes others in the same division will share information from their SR's letters etc. so you will feel connected.  Remember that no news is good news :).  I have to go now but if you have any more questions let me know.  Good luck!
