Welcome Julie!  I'm here in MI. My daughter Katie has been on the Essex for over 2 years out of Sasebo Japan. She has been out to sea a number of times - the ship was to be out to sea 300+ days this year, but some plans changed when the tsunami hit and they were sent to help with reliefe efforts for a time.

Hi Judyann...I am heading back up on Tuesday for 2 1/2 weeks to see my mom.  Taking the ferry to Seattle to go to the Pike Street Market was my favorite thing when I spent summers up there.  The market in the 70's was quite an interesting place.  We are going into Seattle for the Haunted Market tour.  It is a tour through Pike Street area after it is all closed down for the day. Ought to be interesting.  Did you by any chance get to do the underground while you were there?  Seattle's history is pretty interesting

Judyann...that part of Washington is so gorgeous.  It does rain a lot but at least you get beauty with no humidity!!  I would be a very happy camper if my son wound up in Bremerton!!

THe Fed gov't taxes your income regardless of where you serve.  Our state - Michigan - does not tax the military, but many others do.  As to getting paid more - only when they get 'hazard' pay when they travel in/through certain areas from what I understand.

Marianne....Bremerton is one of the places my son listed. That would be a strange full circle because my sister and I spent a lot of time on that base as kids when we visited my grandparents every summer.  They sat in the CPO club and we would watch the sailors play basketball in the gym.  I would not be sad if he was stationed there thats for sure!!  But at least he has said he wouldn't mind Japan. He said they get paid more for being there and if I am not mistaken I think he said it isn't taxed? I just keep telling myself that I only get to see my mom once a year so it will be fine if he winds up there.  Navymom4....wow...we are only about 10-15 minutes from each other.  Maybe one of these days we could have lunch or something.  Please keep me updated on how your son is doing.  You can send a private message if you like.

My brother-in-law's nephew from Seattle joined the Navy 'to see the world' and was assigned to Bremerton - he didn't even get to leave the state accept for BC and training and he was disappointed!
