Biggest concern for our soldiers would be the nuclear plants, disease, and illness

We are quite concerned as well.  I do not actually have fear of disease and illness.  I am concerned that the governments will not do everything that they can to protect our soldiers.  I am praying that they will all be okay.

momoftwosons-Read thru the Discussion Forum above -- DC A-School after 1-14-11 PIR - It will answer some of your questions about A school.  Then ask away - Some are in A school right now - My daughter finished in Mar 09.

Choice after school??? - The Navy sends them where they need them.  You get to feel out your 'dream' sheet (or whatever they call it) with 3 - Katie was sent to Japan to serve on the USS Essex.

My son recently enlisted and has signed on to be a Fireman DC - any words of advise to me as a mom and for him that he should/shouldn't know or do?  any info appreciated.  How long was school and what type of choice if any do they give them for stations after school?

JudyAnn - Persian Gulf-OK. This may be a silly question, but assigned to a ship or on land?  Whenever I think of the Persian Gulf, I think of my brother who was in the Army during that 'war' 20 years ago.

Judyann - That is wonderful that you will be traveling to see your son.  Have you been to Washington before.  We visited there a number of years back in the Seattle area - went whale watching, Mt St Helen's, Boeing, acquarium, zoo, etc.  Take the Stennis is going out for a long deployment (?) since you said you wouldn't be able to see him for a year.  Blessings on your travels.

Marianne and Maggs thank you for sharing your story. Going to Japan for the Tiger Cruise sounds very exciting. You all are in my prayers

Katie went to Sasebo April 2009 and will be on the USS Essex for 3 years.  In 2009 she was home over Christmas.  This year she was home over New Year - it was 1 day longer leave and after Christmas she was able to get together with her friends/family more easily.   My youngest son and I were able to go to Japan for the Tiger Cruise in July and were on the ship 4 days/3 nights.  Katie calls once in a great while and emails regularly.  The Essex will be out to see around 300 days this year.  Last year they were home a great deal because they had the HUGE insepction - the one done every 3-4 years.
