Actually stupid me I am sure all moms have a very hard time with their sons and daughters being overseas. I was excited for a bit thinking that my son really wanted to be overseas and being in the navy he would get his chance. Sort of romantic idea of living in a foreign country. I personally would love Japan and the gardens beauty, but after awhile I am sure the romance wears off. How are you all finding it? What are your sailors comments about Japan? How often have they been ashore in Japan? For what periods?

Kathe, I am sorry about your sons laptop and cell phone. Where will they be put for safe keeping while he is onboard? Do they get dorm rooms assigned even though they are on a ship immediatly?

Hi Judyann.

Maggs, I am soooo happy that my son is in the states. I know he wanted to be in Italy or over seas. There are a few moms I do know that are having a very hard time with being overseas. I do not know what to say. Just know that they are going to experience things others will not. Italy, Japan, germany etc that is every young persons dream to travel.

My son just left GL - DC A training to meet up with the USS Chancellorville.   We thought he was going to be able to take his laptop and/or cell phone, and were disappointed to find out that they would remain in San Diego when he leaves.   This was completely opposite to what his contact person in GL told him.   Our son told us he will be able to email us once in awhile - so it's back to snail-mail!   Occassionaly, they will be allowed a 10-minute call.   Being able to be in contact during A school was such a treat!

Katie is on the USS Essex amphibious assault out of Japan and she talks of divisions and working in the shop.  If you know the carrier he will be on, you could join that group and ask some questions there.

I agree Judyann, when the drums started and they marched in I was biting my lip, breathing deeping and choking back the tears. It was amazing

My son is DC and is a little past midway through A-School. I am so proud of him. We believe we know where his Duty station will be. It is in a beautiful part of the US. I have a mix of emotions can anyone tell me how many guys he will be working with. I hear descriptions like squadron unit, what really applies if he is on a carrier. I do not completely understand the structure of the groups. I know there are classifications and within that there are rates and ranks.

hi judyann - you must be so excited!  How long ago did your sailor finish DC school?  He was sent to Washington after A school?
