Hi kimberlya, welcome.

This site is pretty quiet. My daughter is DC, if you have questions I'll try to help with anything I can. Don't forget to join the bootcamp for moms site. They're wonderful and full of info!

Our son goes to bc on April 25 and is going for DC.  Antone else have kids going to bc in April for DC?

You're welcome!

If I may offer one more suggestion... since you'll be getting there so early, pack some snacks like protein bars & water. It's a long morning before those doors roll up and your sailors march through.

OMG -- I just got goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Enjoy every second!

Yay - So happy you're going! Be sure to bring Kleenex! One thing that made a big difference was bringing a small pair of binoculars (like bird watching type, I bought them on Amazon). Even tho we sat in our sailors Div. section we wouldn't have been able to see her face clearly w/out them. We could see her watching us, tears in her eyes, etc. Amazing!

The length of time for A school differs depending on the sailors rate. Our sailor's PIR was May 8th, she graduated A school early July but it took another 10 days or so for her to get her orders, which means she had to stay there until she did. Then she came home for 2 weeks before reporting to her ship.

thank you for the help! I will be attending PIR and i'm very excited! I've seen in some places that Aschool is 10 weeks?

Hi Maria!

I believe A school for DC's is 6-8 weeks. While my daughter was in school they were condensing the program so it may have changed.  DC's are given orders wherever they're needed and are assigned to a ship. As far as contact, it will depend on whether his ship is dry docked, underway for training, deployed, etc. You'll know a lot more once he gets his orders after graduating A School. The good news is that while he's in school you'll be able to communicate a LOT more than while in bc. It was heaven for me!

My daughter's ship is in it's mid-life overhaul so is docked in San Diego for awhile. Even tho she's not at sea she's on the ship every day working but has poor service. We text and talk frequently tho.

Good luck to your boyfriend! I hope you get to go to PIR, it's amazing!!!

Hi, I'm new to this. My boyfriend of 5 years is 2 weeks away from boot camp graduation then will be staying in GL for a school. His job is a DC so i have some questions. How long is A school? Where are DC's usually based? Like is there a common place they could go or is it whoever needs then at whatever time? Also, if my boyfriend is aboard a ship, what is contact like? Can he call daily, or emails, or is there no contact until they dock somewhere? Thank you for your help!

oops - made a mistake, she completed school on July 15th!

hi kathy, welcome!

My daughter's PIR was May 8th, started A school on 5/11, completed school on July 6th or 7th. It took a couple of weeks for her to get her orders tho so she didn't come home for leave until July 23rd. Hope that helps!
