My son's PIR was Septeber 2011 and my daughter will be leaving December 17, 2012 for BC.  So, I will be a new emptynester.

Welcome Lion55's mom .  You now have a new normal to get used to.  Having a spouse with MS is extremely difficult (one of my son's classmates' Mom's has it, and life has changed for that family.)  I have no words of wisdom about your daughter.  Our kids all have different personalities.

I got through a lot of the times by volunteering more with the youth at church for special events, and having them stay at our home for weekends of conferences, etc.  I also joined Molly's Adopt a Sailor here on N4M and we are busy every month with new adoptions.  Have made some awesome friends through that.

Love to the right where it says "events" and look for things going on in your area.  I travel up to 4 hours to go to some "meet and greets" and have gotten to know families in 3 states through that.  Don't know how much travel you can do, though.

Let us know how we can help.

My son graduated last Friday!!  IT WAS AMAZING!!!  I cried, and laughed, and smiled, and beamed with all the proud mama feelings!  Now on to A school!  HOOYAH!

You know, I was really enjoying the empty nest and then my son came home for a month and left today and I just can't stop crying.  I have a daughter in college who is 19 years old and just doesn't like me.  My husband has MS and sleeps most of the time when he is not at work.  I just feel so alone right now. It was so nice to have my son around and talk to him.  That is one thing about sons, they always love their moms.  Just wish I could break through the shield of ice between my daughter and I.  I haven't cried this much since boot camp and that was two years ago.  My son is a Nuke and has just finished training, it lasted two years and I could talk to him on his cell phone just about any time I wanted to.  He will be on a sub out of Pearl Harbor which sounded like a great idea two years ago but I sure am missing him right now. Will the navy give him a specific email address for me to communicate with him?  He doesn't have girlfriend, he has about twenty of them so I am thinking I will get the phone calls when he can make them.  OMG I am so lonely right now! and the tears continue....

Being as I am a first-time Army mom I couldn't say for sure. Rumor has it that Ft. Jackson is a bit easier compared to the others. But my son is infantry prepping for airborne and he has to do what is called OSUT. Basic Training and AIT all in one 14-week package. I imagine a guardsman's program will just require the Basic part. But they do say that Ft. B is the toughest and the best. Good move on your sons' part! Fun being a 2-branch parent huh?

Well, there is a lot of the same going around.  I had to have our golden retriever put down two days before my #2 son left for Ft. Benning.  She was also a pound puppy but we rescued her as an adult dog.  The sweetest golden ever and a faithful companion.  You know how goldens are.  Now my husband & I share the empty nest with our Soldier's Lab (black) my Lab, (chocolate), and a crazy little Lab-Border collie mix that my Sailor gave me one Xmas before he shipped out.  Empty nest?  Whose?  LOL  But very sorry for the losses of your pets, fellow moms.  Some folks won't understand, but we sure do.

carols kitchen-

I am so sorry that your "pound puppy" is not surviving.    12 years is a long time, and I am sure that she is part of your family.   A terrible loss to lose such a wonderful friend and companion.   We lost our pound cat right after my son went to BC.  She was around 16 years old, we think.   We got her when she was around 10 years of ago.    Her previous owner was killed.  She was such a sweetie.  My thoughts are with you today.  It is never easy saying farewell to our furry family members.  Hugs to you!

Sharpmom-   Welcome to our group!   It is hard being an emptynester, but you always have things to look forward to, like your sailor daughter coming home!   That is the best!!!!   Congratulations to you and your daughter!

So sorry for your loss. We have three pugs and a Sharpei along with a cat. Saying goodbye is never easy.

Thanks everyone.  No more storms for her--and now she can go back to seeing squirrels to chase them again.  Sailor boy called yesterday and understood.
