Hi everyone! My husband graduated BC on 04/06 and going to school as a "FC". Im planning to move to IL in July. We are looking at a apartment in Schaumburg. Does anyone live in IL? How is Schaumburg? How is IL in general?

Yep. Hes almost done filling out the chit to live off base.

Hello! My husband is an ET and I moved to Great Lakes in November. Schaumburg is about 45 minutes away from the base. Have you considered looking into base housing or closer? We enjoy going to Schaumburg on weekends for shopping however it is a little to far my husband felt to commute to the base daily.

We did but we really couldnt find a place that accepts huskies. My husband likes Schaumburg. He says he doesnt mind driving to base everyday. How long are you in GL for?

Not sure how it is now but traffic used to be really nasty between Shaumburg and the base!

Traffic is still bad between those to places..

I do NOT recommend moving to schaumburg. It is way too far away from base for him to be driving at 4am. Trust me I live 20 minutes from base and barely see mine as it is, especially when someone screws up or the chiefs are in a bad mood and give them late liberty. There is an insane amount of traffic if he's not taking the toll roads and if he does take the toll, those will start adding up very quickly and you'll have to waste money on an ipass on top of all the gas. Trust me, only live within 1/2 an hour of base unless he plans on staying during the week and only coming home on the weekends. My husband is on hold for c school right now and so I've been here a while and know the swing of things.

also, one of the nicest apartments closest to base is called the landings at amhurst lake.  it's in the business park by cardinal and abbott, we were going to live there but found a different place instead.  very nice :) i would recommend living in lake forest/lake bluff/libertyville/vernon hills/fort sheridan. those are all GREAT places. we went with the reserves at eagle ridge, and i really regret it. the rent is the cheapest we found for what we have, but at the same time, the military clause is TERRIBLE. you have to pay back all the military discounted rent you've used if you get orders before the end of your lease is up.

They can't do that...check out the SSRA...unless of course if you sign with their mitliary clause...whish isn't really a clause.  I recommend you or your hubby talk to base legal about that if that is going on.

(50 U.S.C. App. § 534)

(1) The provisions of this section shall apply to any lease covering premises occupied for dwelling, professional, business, agricultural, or similar purposes in any case in which (a) such lease was executed by or on the behalf of a person who, after the execution of such lease, entered military service, and (b) the premises so leased have been occupied for such purposes, or for a combination of such purposes, by such person or by him and his dependents.

(2) Any such lease may be terminated by notice in writing delivered to the lessor (or his grantee) or to the lessor's (or his grantee's) agent by the lessee at any time following the date of the beginning of his period of military service. Delivery of such notice may be accomplished by placing it in an envelope properly stamped and duly addressed to the lessor (or his grantee) or to the lessor's (or his grantee's) agent and depositing the notice in the United States mails. Termination of any such lease providing for monthly payment of rent shall not be effective until thirty days after the first date on which the next rental payment is due and payable subsequent to the date when such notice is delivered or mailed. In the case of all other leases, termination shall be effected on the last day of the month following the month in which such notice is delivered or mailed and in such case any unpaid rental for a period preceding termination shall be proratably computed and any rental paid in advance for a period succeeding termination shall be refunded by the lessor (or his assignee). Upon application by the lessor to the appropriate court prior to the termination period provided for in the notice, any relief granted in this subsection shall be subject to such modifications or restrictions as in the opinion of the court justice and equity may in the circumstances require.

my husband talked to legal already and there is no problem.

Thanks i checked out libertyville and vernon hills but sucks that a lot of places dont accept huskies..

I live in Waukegan...It is a little town but we actually go into a little house with a shed in the back and a nice backyard.  The best part is its only 4 miles or so away from base and we have a snake, 3 lizards, a ferret, and two dogs (bordercollie/shephard mix and american bulldog/boxer mix) and our landlord is fine with it.  We looked at apartments but they wouldn't even look at us because one of the reptiles is "exotic".  So my suggestion, go drive through little neighborhoods  and look at a house to rent.  You might be surprised at what a great deal you can get!

I'm looking to move there also in a few weeks. My husband is working on filling out the chit now. Any more advice you can offer? We have two small children and it's important to us to live close. We're thinking that the best thing for us is to live in PPV on base housing but we really know nothing about it. I'd also like to make connections with other spouses of ETs and FCs!
