Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Oh, and to add in, they tend to get a little more time off in the afternoons if the person in charge can't find enough work and lets them go on liberty early.
They still need to do PT, sometimes there will be training courses on assorted subjects, and they have to keep their rooms and uniforms clean and up to inspection standards. Lots of things to stay on top of.

Having been on long holds at Great Lakes, they are indeed given daily jobs. Some get assigned to office work, some clean, others get landscaping details, or snow duty in the winter. The Navy doesn't hire janitors, after all. There is always something to be done. A few will get a job that is the same thing and place daily, others are assigned as needed. I've done stints answering phones, raking leaves, cleaning the dental offices, picking up trash, painting the barracks lounge ... with all that free labor, training bases tend to look nice and neat.

morning ladies.. when the lads are on "hold" do they spend a lot of time just hanging out or are they given anything productive to do besides their assigned guard duty? my son is enjoying his new independence and doesn't share much detail and i'm not pushing- but i'm darn curious!

Thank you I have not been back on here because my son ended his 2 year relationship with her and i am heart broken for both of them. I cried for 2 days and to some that might seem ridiculous but she has been like our child for 2 years, her family is not the best and she wants to be part of our family. I have gotten better the last couple days. he has agreed to keep in contact with her and i pray they can mend only if to be friends again. they moved pretty fast getting engaged and we tried to tell them but to no avail now we are here and its terrible. They both need to mature and when he is gone first to Cali then to Japan he may grow up really quick. As far as the behaviors we didn't even ask him but he knows he can be masted. He will have to own it if that happens. thank you for your kind words.

DrMary ... most FCs will go to a ship first after C school, as their rotation begins with sea duty. Which ships will be determined by which C school and system they train on. Any Navy port with surface ships is a possibility. Could be Norfolk, WA, San Diego, Hawaii, Japan, and any of the other homeports. You can rule out any air base or submarine base. First term sailors can fill out a dream sheet, but they're sent according to needs of the Navy.

LOL, yes, I said he was an adult, but most "adult sailors" don't finish growing until they've been deployed a couple times ... even then we were all big kids some days.

Jack's Momma ... you are in a hard spot because he's an adult now, and the Navy very much expects him to be one. Underage drinking will get him sent to Captain's Mast, as well as anyone who provides him with alcohol, or who is around and does not stop him.
As for a fiance, if he is having doubts now that he is a sailor, and is that young, they need to wait. Trust me, he is trying out his freedoms, learning more about himself than he ever has before, and she might not have a place in all that right now. I saw it dozens of times. Hometown sweethearts do not always make it through the first duty station, especially long distance, and especially Japan. If they cannot survive a long distance relationship over a year or two, the marriage won't hold in the long run. Usually I don't discourage a military marriage, but this is setting off alarm bells for me. They need a nice long engagement, and to finish growing up.

My FC went to C school in Dahlgren, VA. He really liked it. He is in Japan now.
