Ouch ... LOL. All of us ETs were push button crows; I never met one who wasn't. It ain't easy, I got to E-5 in C school and hit my first command with precious little leadership opportunities. Oh sure, I'd been a platoon leader in A school, and class leader, but that's the blind leading the blind. I learned fast enough though, I was an E-6 and an LPO before I knew it. Long story with that workshop ... more blog fodder I'm sure.

Egos ... yeah. LOL, yeah, I've seen it too. Although the worst ego-mongers I dealt with were the wives of junior officers, right behind some of the Navy pilots. I'm not insulting Navy pilots, they're just a different breed than us lowly sailors.

Unless there's something in their contract and teh school which allows it. I made E-4 ten weeks into ET A school, but that was the program at the time. It may well have changed. Ask your sailor, they should know their contract forwards and back.

Okay, the E-4 advancement. if FC contract is like the ET contract, the E-4 is awarded for successful completion of the school. This is different from advancing from E-3 to E-4 in the fleet, which is done by exams and evals and points. I would have to look up the new regs to be 100% certain, but that's the way it has been. But then again, the school and the holds put it past six months in most cases. None of them will advance past E-3 until they have finished their school, unless they go to the fleet as a striker. Doesn't happen often in the electronic rates, but it can.

There's a big "jump" between E-3 and E-4. Once you hit E-4, you're a Petty Officer. You get a "crow", an eagle over a chevron, not the simple slash of a seaman. It is a big deal. I wonder if they still "tack on" the crow (punch on the arm).

Most E-4s are not authorized to live off base unless they have dependents. That's usually an E-5 or above privilege. It varies from command to command, and school commands usually keep their junior petty officers in the barracks (ships).

There is so much to learn Kellie and Mickie is still pretty new to this as well. The rates have a time in element as well and if I remember correctly he has to be an E3 for six months - so the end of A school should be right on for him.

Nancy, so glad that you heard from him - yes less customers...higher profile. Flip a coin on which is the best scenerio on that one! Liberty in NY - how nice for those sailors.

Kellie - Mickie does have away to go to earn that BAH unless you are married. Is he an E3 now Kellie?

Very cool, Karmen.

Barracks roommates ... oh, I will have to do a blog for that!

Julie, ask Kyle about servos and synchros. That was a devilish subject for me and a lot of other ETs. Since it is radar related, I bet the FCs have to learn it too.

Goodness Karmen - life does sound good for Andrew! What a good placement the Navy-Marine corp society was for him and now you don't need to worry about Thanksgiving dinner and an airline ticket for Christmas too - his manners must be the best! How nice for him!

Life is good, we have great children (or fiances or husbands) and that's all we ever need to remember! Got to talk to my favorite (only) son tonight, he sounds good and has duty this weekend.

For those that enjoy impressing their sailors...we are working on a trivia/slang post for the site that could be alot of fun. Coming to a N4Ms website soon!!!

Kellie, keep it up. I actually blew my sons socks off a couple times with information, and then sometimes he corrected me. There is always going to be extenuating circumstances. its really fun to do those tests about slang, etc!

We did not have SCC, I wish we had. It would have been useful. Instead, we had ITB during A school. Integrated Training Battalion, it was held after school before chow. That program was a forerunner of SCC, which by all accounts sounds far better.
