Kellie, I'm not sure that is correct as it is just a basic seamanship course. I'm not sure if an undesignated sailor would go thru SCC and then report to the fleet so maybe an undesignated sailor might refer to it as their ...A school (?)

It's all about acronyms Sharon and your son learned a lot of them in boot camp and now...there are all these others for school and the fleet. If he gets frustrated with you...just remind him that YOU have not been trained by the Navy...yet!

Just ask and I will try to answer correctly. Some things have changed, ATT used to be BE/E and so on. But somethings do not change. Like holds... I was on hold an awful lot. It is better now the nukes have their own A school; they used to go through the regular A school with us non-nukes, but they always got pushed in front of us. I have done my share of painting and shoveling. Best hold was working in the ET shop for BE/E (ATT) where I got to learn soldering and troubleshooting before I'd learned any formal electronics at all!

Thanks Anti-M, I love it in lay terms. Everyone knows I have a hard time deciphering the navy language-ease. Whatever.

Sharon, the connections from GL are not usually good but I think you heard Ben wrong. It's SCC - which is a basic seamanship class. Both the ETs and the FCs complete this class, it lasts about two weeks and held in the evenings.

Sharon, "holds" are when they are just waiting for class to start. Often during a hold they will give them small jobs to do like cleaning, painting, etc.

Kellie and Anti M, I think you did a good job with the difference between an ET and FC but I will tell you that my FC husband would tell you that one of the big differences is ONLY an FC can work on their equipment. And I think I have heard him pounding on his chest when saying - other departments have to call in someone for repairs but FCs...do it all.

Of course, it could be macho or it could be the system that they are working on or it could just be my darling husband! There is definitely alot of similiarities in the ratings - just check out the job descriptions posted in our discussion forum.

Ellen, the holds and the holidays can certainly effect their time at GL but another year seems to be excessive. Most FCs are 7 to 8 months without holds.
Comment by Anti M on November 3, 2008 at 9:06pm
... except sometimes the FCs are the ones who fix the radar ... yeah, it gets confusing. I took the FC exam back in 1980 when the Navy was considering combing the ET and FC rates. There is some overlap.
Comment by Anti M on November 3, 2008 at 9:02pm
I've been lurking the comments ... an FC points and fires the big guns; the ETs keep the radar running so the FCs can "see". Plus, ETs work on communications and computers. A few do radar AND comms, but not all. I was strictly secure voice crypto gear (comm); hubby was comms and radar and kept the coke machines running in his spare time.

It's been quite here today, haven't talked to our son since Thursday other than a couple of texts from Gurnee Mall!

Jackie - those are sweet grandchildren, nice job on the costumes!!!
