Welcome Karmen! Will your son be an ET? It sounds like he can come home for dinner once he gets to C school!

We are in Atlanta so our son is not quite used to the GL weather either but he did get thru boot camp last February. We have offered to send a few heavy clothes but he is so determined to keep it light so he doesn't have alot to back out -- he's hoping to be out of there before winter really begins. What he doesn't understand is...that can happen next week in GL!!!

Jackie, have lots of fun with the girls. Coming from a family with five kids, outside of local camping trips - vacations just were not in the budget. I made my first trip to the Disney parks when I was 21, I thought it was the most amazing place on earth!

OK call me silly, but first: A.) Jackie says she is taking her daughter/gdaughter to Disney World. Then, B.) Kellie says the experience has brought her and Mickey so much closer together. I'm thinking.....
M-I-C-K-E-Y m-o-u-s-e! LOL.

Don't freak out Kellie but you do want to understand what your future holds. Yes, he very likely will be attached to a ship for four years. That ship can be homeported in the USA or outside our country. He will NOT be at sea for 4 solid years. It depends on the needs of the Navy but his ship could be deployed for 3 -7 months at a time depending on their mission and they put in really long days when they are out to sea. They do stop at ports and many of the wives/families will meet the sailors in those ports - they will organized group discounts.

When their ship is in their homeport, it is much like having a 9 to 5 job and if you are married, he will be home every night and on the weekends except when he has duty which is usually a 4 day rotation. On those days - he must sleep on the ship. You will find though the married guys often can trade their duty days with the single sailors that don't care about sitting in the homeport - they'd rather be out to sea. So my husband would switch duties alot and he would take their duty while they were in some exotic port and they would cover him while he was at home.

It's a great experience Kellie but you have to be independent, open to new places and people, commited to the relationship, enjoy travel and know that he is going to be gone more than he will be home but waiting at the pier for that ship to return is undescribable. If you thought PIR was great - meet a ship return from deployment! Your life as a Navy wife will be as good as you want it to be. Although at times, it can be frustrating - I never regretted any of it.

You are funny Kellie, it depends on their rate. I believe ETs are also consider "seagoing" rate. I am not sure of the rotation for ETs, it could be 4/3 rotation meaning four years attached to a ship and then 3 years shore duty. Are you scared yet?!!! LOL

Mickey should know the rotation or one of our seasoned ET moms can probably give you a more solid answer.

Welcome to our newest member Anti M, she is an ex Navy ET and her husband is a retired ET and I bet they can bring a wealth of knowledge to our ET families.

Julissa - so glad that you have caught up with us now. Congrats to your daughter on her PIR! Let us know what question you may have.

Julie's FC son is actually home on leave right now but he will be heading to Japan TOO soon for Julie!

It was two different extremes for our son and daughter. He graduated with almost 3000 seniors but our daughter wanted to attend a Christian Academy and it was all of 40. It was a neat school and a tight knit class that will be friends for life. I'm not sure my son could tell you who 40 of his classmates were!! Such a different world.

Nancy is right, Marsher's son is in Dam Neck - he has orders to his ship already and that is in Norfolk. Julie's son is also an FC and he want to school in Dam Neck as well if I remember right and now he is with his ship in Japan.

One thing that we have seen with ET orders for C school is - they seem to get their ship orders at the same time so that maybe what Mickey is referring to.
