some general FIT info (with updates and cautions at the end... don't think the visit part is still true)

my son failed his last run just before battlestations, and we got the dredded "don't come I will not be in PIR" call.  Before I canceled our flights I did a lot of research on this and other sites and found out...

1. if you fail the run, you are moved to FIT and will re-try every other day until you pass

2. when you pass, you will be sent to the very next battlestations, even if it is that night.

3. You will have some liberty after battlestations before you are shipped off to A school.  Time varies depending on the school

4. the trainers at FIT will work hard to help your child achieve!

6. if they are able to pass the run the next day (if it is offered) they go to PIR right after battlestations, they sit in the balcony at the left end of the hall, not in front of the division...but we sat with the division and our son found us there afterwards. (b/c the schedule allowed for him to try again the night before)

we decided not to cancel the flights and to try to see him.  our prayer was just that.  HOWEVER he passed his test on the next run, went to battlestations that night and was at his PIR in the stands (they wouldnt let him march since he had now been up over 24 hours.  battlestations ended 7 am.)  He got to see all his division buddies, and had the whole day with us!  It was great!!!  There were 17 other kids who passed with Taylor.  Most parents had canceled their flights :(

It is a personal choice for each family once you get the call.  Cancel if you need to. no guilt.    However, if you can attend anyway, your child MIGHT be there, based on how quickly he passes and when battlestations are scheduled

hope this info helps!

(9/10/12)- I think this post created too many phone calls to the command.    I deleted some of the contact info.  please do not call the base.  My info about visits may no longer be true, but still know your kids are in good hands, and there is blessing for them in finding the resolve and courage to accomplish this goal for themselves.  I didn't delete the entire post b/c I think there is a lot of encouragement in the comments and replys, but please do not hold hope you will get to see our child.  Based on replies, the command is being very strict about visitors now...

Thanks, Dani.  My girl didn't pass before PIR so I was glad I cancelled my flight.  Her father lives within driving distance, so the good thing is that when she passes, her dad will get to come and spend time with her.

I might add, that the Pulbic Affairs office was very helpful and was able to tell me, not only that my daughter hadn't passed her run on Tuesday, but by how much.  If it had been a few seconds, I would have gone anyway in hopes that she would pass the Thursday test.  I wouldn't call them just to ask out of curiousity, because they aren't prepared to run around checking on each run, but if your travel plans are contingent on knowing, by all means call and explain your situation.

My daughter got a call on Saturday and said that is routine.  From what I have read, that may be a new routine or it may have been a one-time privilege.   She also expects to be able to call when she has passed the test.

and remember... if you think you will cancel your flight, you do not have to do it immediately.  You can cancel any time prior to your flight.  Do not panic.  Take time to think all options through

My son just called me about an hour ago that he missed his run by 18 seconds :( I don't know what to do. He is supposed to

PIR 8-12. He was on the phone with me reading off a script so everything I asked he tried but couldn't really answer. Only because they way my life has gone in the past year and a half I had a bad gut feeling I would get this call so i did some research on the FIT group. I asked him if he is gonna try his run in the next couple days and if he passes he will get to do BS and graduate on time. I guess I just don't know what to do. Do I go to Chicago? Do I wait to hear from him this week? I am sick about the whole thing. Any insight would be great.

Don't cancel your plans yet!!!  You need to wait.  I think he will complete the run and go through Battle Stations Monday night.  When your travel plans become critical, that is, you are down to the last minute in which you can make the decision, you can call POA and they will tell you whether he has passed yet, and if not by how much he missed it.

I was able to confirm that they are doing Battle Stations on Thursday night.  That being said, and given the fact that your recruit only has 18 seconds to cut and 2 tries in the next 4 days to do it, I wouldn't consider changing my plans yet.
Thanks again. I messaged you :)

I completely agree.    you do not need to rush canceling your flight.  Wait until the morning you are suppose to leave even.  My son missed by 13 seconds and made it the next run. Dont know where you live or where he is being sent to.  we decided we were going to PIR no matter what since we wouldnt have another chance to see him right away.  Once they get to A school though, I have found out they have much more free time, and can even leave the base on weekends, so you could visit him at A school if needed too.  Follow your heart!...and take comfort in knowing whatever you do, it is OK.

also- look up info about "personal belongings" you can send with them to A school.  You can easily meet them at the airport after PIR with a black or navy bag / backpack filled with stuff they can use in A school.  It is an easy transition before they go through security at the airport

Hi Dani. We would drive since we are only about 8 hours away and after talking to HM Mom Ruth I decided I don't care I am going. I think he is going to be at Great Lakes for A school. I am hoping and praying that he will do it Monday morning and then go through BS so hopefully I will get a call Tuesday. I can only hope but if not he has Wed  to do it. That's awesome that your son got it on the very next try. I am still trying to process this since I just got the call about 7 hours ago but I'll be honest I was in tears until I started talking to this group and seeing how positive everybody is. You guys are great!
