Last year I worked a seminar at UT LBJ Library, which devotes itself to social issues, Tom Daschle was one of the speakers. This issue, problem, whatever is not just now being thought about, these were some of the best and smartest from universities from around the nation, and the only topic was health care for this nation.

I'm aware it wont be free which is why I used quotes in my "free" because many who do not have it are viewing this as free health care.. its going to take time and my only point to all of this is not just throw something out there and find out its going to cost the tax payers more..

I agree we absolutely need to push for it and keep this going .. but we need to make sure we are pushing for the right thing that will work for the majority.of those in need... some systems don't work others do.. I had a friend who was on a waiting list for surgery in Canada for 6 months.. but then in some countries people are having liposuction on the gov't dime.. Lets keep it on front page but I just want it done right... we have a history of jumping into things then we discover we took the wrong path.. I also believe if you get "free" health insurance you need to give back through volunteerism..

It's a huge job, I agree, but if Obama doesn't continue to push for it, and push for it now, it will slide back to the back burner once again and we won't have it. Neither Obama or Clinton brought this up in the campaign, John Edwards did, he made his place in the race by promoting health coverage and health care for those that didn't have it. No Republicans pushed it at all...and then bam...it was an issue. It can't be allowed to be dropped again. If people don't put the effort in now, it won't happen. And it has to happen...

When I first got divorced.. healthcare was covered for the boys by medicaid.. but I had nothing... someone told me about a small clinic that would give me care but I had to pay a small fee based on my income and then volunteer time to "pay back" I did it gladly... I agree we need an overhaul but we need to put time and thought into this not just throw something out there thats going to burden the taxpayers more.. we need to look at other countries who have universal healthcare and see how they are doing it.. see what works what doesnt and calculate the economic impact.. its not going to happen overnight .. especially for a plan that works..

I read a story Friday about a Marine Recruit who died trying to lose weight to get into the Marines.. kidney's shut down. it had to be a horrible death for him. thats my worry for my son... if he was 20lbs I can see the Army having an issue and I use to always say once your 5lbs over 10 is around the corner.. and thats coming from someone who use to weight 350... There is more to someones weight than weight.. muscle... body comp needs to come into play here and I dont think it is.. he's rock solid and muscular.. he has no body fat... its frustrating but I do feel better after speaking to the RDC yesterday..

Debby, it's scary isn't it? the Marines have an automated message, I got one for my son's old unit that is now being deployed the other day. I was glad to punch the number saying no more calls!!! It's nice to hear a real voice say they know your son, I bet...are you feeling a little more reassured?
Comment by Debby on July 24, 2009 at 9:29pm
First let me say everything is fine... but I got this weird call today.. didnt know the number on my cell phone but they left a message..hmmm so I did a reverse look up on the phone number.. and its from Watertown NY.. home of Ft. Drum where my soldier is based. I almost started crying at that moment but then listened to the message it was the RDC telling me all is ok but they needed to confirm the contact info my soldier gave them.. phone number and address... I hate the address part.. they need it for usually only 1 reason.. so he wants to know how I am doing?? wow how nice.. now ladies I never got this from the Navy.. maybe my sailor dropped the ball but my soldier didnt... anyway I told him I was upset about one thing.. and thats the "flag" for my son being over weight now again its like 1 or 2 lbs.. I said I understand.. standards are standards.. but to make a soldier worry while in a warzone is inexcusable.. that instead of worrying about being safe he has to worry about losing weight which in 120 degree weather is not safe... he agree'd and told me not to worry that most of the guys have to deal with this in the beginning because they are fed much better quality food.. but he understood my concerns... and also added that they are not encouraged to exercise when the heat is extreme but once he's use to the new routine the weight will correct itself.. I asked him "can you tell him that because he's very stressed about this when I spoke with him last, he takes his army career very serious" he said yep I know PFC (last name) and he's a good soldier and one they all count on.. that made me feel good.. anyway.. what a scare that was in the beginning...
